Lubricated Wads Contaminating Black Powder or Substitute

Crisco melts easily. I once put Crisco in the bases of my minies while at a competition shooting match. Stored in a plastic box behind the firing line, Crisco went to liquid in the heat. I had to pour the mess out before putting the loads in my cartridge box. Take a sample and put it in the sun...

Does lead really wear out rifling by it's passage?

I bought a well-used unmentionable small bore rifle. It was oval shaped at the muzzle from excess cleaning. I wanted to have a sleeve installed to return the rifle to shooting status. Found out from the gunsmith doing the re-sleeve that there was a sleeve already in the barrel. The original...

    Tight ramrod

Taper the end of the rod that goes into the fore end. Only use the new wood rod in a hunting situation and only use short pushes when loading. For target shooting, carry a sturdy work rod.

    Musket caps

My friend really likes the RWS wingless caps. I have some of the RWS 4 wing and several tins of Navy Arms 4 wing musket caps.

    FFFFg powder priming

I just stopped by to see how many pages were on the current question. When I first started with flintlocks, I bought a pound of FFFFg. I forget how long it took before using all of that powder. Then I started with FFFg for priming the pan. Never bought FFFFg again.

    TC Renegade **** Geometry Adjustment

Judging by your pictures, the flint appears to be a bit on the short size. That would cause the flint to strike lower on the frizzen. All of my flintlocks work best with the flint almost touching the frizzen. The flint will strike the frizzen at a higher point, producing more sparks, as long as...

    Geometries of a flintlock

Flints are always a curiosity. Some flints will last for many shots and once in a while, the edge will go away after one or two hammer falls. I have had both kinds over the many years of shooting flintlocks. I will flip the flint over at times or knap the edge back as needed. Many flints have...

Got my tools, ready to disassemble, any words of warning?

On my work bench, I made some cuts in the wood under the table top. I made the cuts wide enough and just deep enough for a "Jewlers drawer". It's a thin drawer with a white cloth stretched across it. It's there to catch any small screws, washers and any other little parts that want to go missing...

Do I need a filler for a 20 grain charge in a .44 cal. Cylinder?

A friend shot his Remington .44 revolver at N-SSA competitions. He had all of the chamber of the cylinder drilled out to one standard size. Using 20 grs FFFg, corn meal as a filler, a .454 ball and a dab of crisco at the end of the chamber. he has won several shooting matches. It works for him...

Do I need a filler for a 20 grain charge in a .44 cal. Cylinder?

I get good accuracy with 15 gr. FFFg, a felt patch soaked in Wonder Lube and a .451 round ball in my .44 Colt. Tho sometimes accuracy is sometimes affected by the caffeine shakes. I don't need much powder to punch holes in paper.
