What is the deal with the fouling ring

Well, to polish you'll need to pull the breech plug any way. I guess you could get creative and make a lead lapping plug without pulling it but it makes it easier. You can find videos on how to make this plug. It's not hard but you'll want to index it so it goes in the barrel the same way...

What is the deal with the fouling ring

It's machining rings caused by the reamer when making the barrel. All Colerain barrels have them. Look down the barrel with a bore scope and you'll see them. They catch a lot of fouling. My 58 has one down near the breech. You can polish it with some polishing compound or just keep...

Do you name the guns that you build?

If so why or why not? Feminine or Masculine? Is it bad luck to name it before it's finished? I must know the rules as I don't want to breach etiquette.

The real muzzleloading stuff you did was going antiquing with your wife. That's also known as money in the bank. Wise man!

Can powder brand be responsible for this much difference?

I bought a bunch of Scheutzen and Graf's, which is Scheutzen in a Graf's bottle, and that's what I practice with. I use a lighter load of Swiss when I'm hunting so wiping between shots isn't as critical. That stuff is really clean. Very good powder but about $10 a lb more.

Can powder brand be responsible for this much difference?

If you chronograph the two powders Swiss will shoot 300fps faster than Scheutzen. That's huge.

I found a piece of highly figured 10/4 cherry today. 10' long and no checking on the ends. $163. I bought it.

You've totally turned me on to cherry. It's actually the cheapest of the three, Mapel, walnut and Cherry, at Paxton hardwoods where I get wood. I just hope I can make it look half as good.

    Barrel Question

I've bought Colerain directly from Colerain and a couple of barrels from TOW. The tow barrels have no markings and square bottom rifling. Like Phi said they shoot well so why question, I was just wondering if someone knew.

    Barrel Question

I know it sounds crazy but I did and they told me they don't disclose who makes their barrels only that they're American made.
