    Shooting The Fowler

I’ve never shot a flintlock Fowler and was wondering what, if any, difference there was when shooting flying targets than with a modern shotgun? Thanks.

I like the way you think!

    How much is too much.

Lol, that’s the most common sense reply I’ve gotten. I agree.

    How much is too much.

Correct, that’s why I build the golden age profile. It’s really no big deal. I’ll just throw her over my shoulder and hump it up the hill. It’s just my OCD personality. But you have to be a little obsessive to want to build your own rifles in the first place. Thanks for all the good info guys.

    How much is too much.

Yes, it’s a heavy barrel bolt gun. 9lb GPR with a 32” is in the neighborhood if 9lb 9oz with 42”.

    How much is too much.

True but still 3 lbs lighter than my bolt rifle.

    How much is too much.

It’s looking like 9lb9oz. It’s a golden age, 42 straight octagonal made from hard maple.

    How much is too much.

I was just wondering how much a 54 long rifle should weigh. Thanks

    54 Caliber for Elk

Wow, what a great story! Thanks for answering all of my questions. I definitely feel confident using a 54 on elk now. I made a bad shot on a Mulie last week with my 308 and 6x25 scope. It happens. It was a lethal hit, like yours, but I had to put a finishing shot on him. Thanks again Zutt-Man.

    54 Caliber for Elk

Congratulations and Thanks for the photo. Can you tell me about your kill? Load, rifle, shot placement, how far did he go, what kind of blood trail did you have? Thanks again Zutt-Man

    54 Caliber for Elk

You are correct, 13 oz more than my 45 cal straight octagonal barrels I’ve built. But still much lighter than my bolt elk rifle.

    54 Caliber for Elk

I’m wanting to build a flintlock rifle to elk hunt with in the September muzzleloader season in CO. My question to the experienced veterans is will a 54 caliber round ball be sufficient or should I go bigger? I’ll build with 42” barrel, 1 in 56 twist is what I think it is. Thanks in advance...
