How long would you go when using spit patches without concern?

I was shooting in a match in Fernie, BC about 35 years ago(?) It was below zero in US degrees. I had several spit lubed patches ...perhaps with a little too much "tag" left on them ...freeze to the brass end on my range rod and come right back out of the barrel like a popsicle! Only time I've...

How tight to patch a ball

Good shooting! And smart development process. Your experiments matched my last effort almost exactly. ...and WE wound up in the same place, in terms of patch material and moose milk lube and fit of the combo in the barrel. Congratulations

To Bounce or not to Bounce

I have had some very good targets over the years w/o "thumping" or otherwise damaging the patched RB. One thing I noticed years ago was that if I used a flat-ended ramrod rather than a cupped end that fit the ball, the flattened (?) balls shot just fine out to 50yds or so . At least I could not...

    Hello from North Central Washington

Welcome from Montana! My intro to Black Powder was a few years before you were born in the Yakima area where I grew up and shot my first elk ....and a few years later, my first ML elk. I have taken a few deer the woods around Winthrop.

    Shot in a pistol

I tried one of the .357 "shot capsules" made by Speer in a modern pistola, loaded with #9 shot. Shot at a grouse in a tree not 12 feet from the gun....bird fluttered to the ground...success! At home after dressing the bird, I could find no shot whatsoever in the carcas, but one sliver of...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I shot in a local(?) match as part of Big Sky State Games. Had a great time and reasonably good luck. Attached is one of my best ever groups offhand at 50yds. Shot 11 targets with my .45 cal. custom barrel on a Cabelas/Hawken kit gun. First outing for this rig in nearly a year. Fired over...

    Average Group

I appreciate the honesty(?) on this thread. While I've had my good days as any of us, I'm satisfied with 3-4" groups at 50 and 9" groups at 100yds offhand. From x-stix I would like to get groups 1/2 that size shooting PRB. Sometimes it happens...sometimes it doesn't.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Wind was blowing 45-55mph. So cold I had to have ear flappers down to mow the lawn....in June! ...so hunkered in the shop and cast .440 RBs....lots of 'em!

Oxidized balls, think they will be a problem?

In a revolver....I guarantee you will not be able to tell the difference!

What's your go to lube recipe?

I use a blend similar to those mentioned above on conicals and to seal the front of cylinder on a revolver with 5 parts Beeswax, 4 parts Crisco and 1/2 part (or less) anhydrous lanolin (measured by volume). A little dab of lanolin makes it stick to the bullets better and may help with lubrication.

T-shirt Patching NOT a good Idea

My younger brother used to cut patches from his T-shirt ....while he was wearing it! (never worked all that well, but was expedient) He had a .45 Dixie pistol kit gun when we were kids. We'd spend an afternoon shooting at ground squirrels...can of powder in his rear pocket and a pocket full...

    BALLISTOL a fair shake

Started using Ballistol after watching friends clean up with it. Recently broke in a new .54 barrel and was using spit as I had for decades in my .45s. Got tough to load after a few shots so gave a 1/5 bal/H20 mix a try as patch lube. Shot great espec especially as I shoot a tight-fitting...

    Antelope stuff

Glad she had you guys to help her out of that fix! I've seen a few jump fences, but not many. One time saw one running down a road toward a cattle guard. Stopped way back to allow it time/space to change it's mind, but instead it jumped the cattleguard at full throttle....knew better than to...
