    Ballistol as a patch lube.................

Etipp, Just finished our MT Traditional ML season. I used the Ballistol/moose milk formula discussed earlier on in other posts through this season. Did not have severe cold, down to maybe 20 degrees, dry, but it seemed to work fine. I did load a card (28 guage) over the powder as I left the...

    Montana Heritage Muzzleloader Season

I've hunted it all three years..(going out again tomorrow). I have thoroughly enjoyed it because of the lack of competition at least at this point. A lot of the game has relaxed a little making it a little easier to get shot opportunities without the competition of the general season. I would...

    Montana Heritage Season Opener

Thanks Dan O! I downloaded that program...plugged in my load data and ... I had previously estimated that the shot went about 30" downwind at 170yds. The program indicated 33" with my estimated wind of 15mph.. I could very easily be off some on the wind. The hold was on top of the rump and...

    Montana Heritage Season Opener

Thanks for the comments. I don't like shooting that far but felt out of options on that last shot. I 'm studying up on round ball wind drift...had no idea they drifted so much......and ...just finished making a new ramrod!

    Montana Heritage Season Opener

Enjoyed a couple more days afield with my .54 cal. Hawken kit gun. After some enjoyable hunts I still had a deer tag so decided to try for some deer I'd studied for a while that were nearly impossible to get close to. They would come in evenings to some alfalfa fields and bed during the day on...

    Montana Heritage Season Opener

I was part of that crowd...in the 70s while in college at WSU. Didn't take long to sell that H&R and build a kit gun (1976)I still shoot. Got a cow elk that first year with the kit gun. I agree with your comments and expect pressure to "include" more modern stuff as this season develops.

    Montana Heritage Season Opener

I took a young lady out for deer in Central MT Sat and Sunday. She had never fired a ML before....with glove over the nipple, we dry fired my .54cal. Hawken 3 times in the pickup before going out. Later that morning she got a doe with a heart shot at 30yds. Then Sunday pm got a nice 4/4...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

The sight should(?) fit tight enough, but if not, try one or more very thin shims under the sight inside the dovetail. this will press the sight upward and tighten it within the dovetail.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Had to add a "post script" to yesterday's post. I took the same young lady out again this afternoon... after filling a doe tag yesterday and jumping several bucks in the process. Just before dark we spotted a nice 4x4 buck feeding with some does ..upwind at about 150yds. This was one of the...

    .45 caliber Seneca

I believe the difference is because the table is for bullets and the FFg makes sense to me. Shooting PRB I prefer FFF....Still, I have had PRBs splatter on bones with 80grains....One ball hit mid ribs and I found 3 seperate wound channels through the lungs of a WTail buck. all stopped under...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I took a friends grand daughter out for deer this morning. 30 degrees and wind blowing 30-40mph. This gal is in early 20s and has taken several deer and elk with modern weapons. This was her first exposure to MLoading. We could see the head of a bedded spike buck through the brush at about...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I had one last range session yesterday just to build a little confidence before our season opener Saturday. I'll be taking a friends granddaughter out to try for her first ML deer. Rifle shot fine, bullets touching at 50, about 3" high...about 3" group at 100 and 4" high.... and dead on at 150...

    What caliber rifle to get?

I got a good barrel in .45 cal specifically to shoot round balls at paper and gongs. Very accruate and no complaints, mild recoil everything I ever wanted....but for hunting, I have had game (deer and antelope) run a little farther than I like even with good hits. I prefer a .54 for my...

Longer Barrels On Small Caliber ML

Your logic is sound IMHO....I prefer longer...36" or longer barrels in any cal. for offhand shooting. Whether it is the length or the weight...I'm not sure but a short light barrel is the most difficult to shoot offhand. I'm not commenting on accuracy. Assuming the barrels are "accurate"...

Best barrel twist for .54 Caliber

I just started shooting a new 36" Rice barrel, .54 cal. with 1/70 twist. Shoots RBalls great. I shoot 55gr. FFF at 50yds and touch bullets....80grFFF at 100yds to be able to use the same sight picture. And it groups 2.5-3.5" I have tried 90 grains and it seems to shoot OK so plan to hunt with...

    Hawken accuracy problem

What Phil and Pete said.... Try a thicker patch. I have a similar make rifle in .54 and it likes a tight patch/ball combo. If that fails....try a .50 cal. maxi-ball or some short, .50 cal. mini.
