Which is historically correct, precut patches or cut at muzzle?

If you use a needle and thread, you can string 50-60 patches together and then hang them by the thread to your pouch strap or similar, very fast to grab one and HC to boot. I have tried the ball boards, never really worked for me, not enough balls to do a whole woods walk/match and never found...

    KIBLER WOODRUNNER TALL SITE

I started with the stock sights, after finding my best load and filing down the front sight to align POI with POA I had only a small nubbin of a front sight left. Now admittedly a lot of original long rifles have very small front sights, but my old eyes struggled with it so I replaced them both...

    Vent hole location?

Just shoot it! Have you ever watched, I mean really watched a buddies flintlock go off, a good lock and the flash and gun going off is almost instantaneous, even if the pan is completely full (which is not needed) the gun goes off very quickly. This is assuming a properly sized vent hole (check...

    Wheel weight lead question

The Southeast Missouri Lead District, commonly called the Lead Belt, is a lead mining district in the southeastern part of Missouri. Counties in the Lead Belt include Saint Francois, Crawford, Dent, Iron, Madison, Reynolds, and Washington. This mining district is the most important and critical...

Help Selecting a New Rifle (Cap vs Percussion, and more)

And of course, a lot depends on what your plans are for the longer term, any plans for reenacting, buy a lock that is suitable for the time frame of the events you plan to attend. Mid to late 1700's is the time frame of interest for me so I am almost all flint. Hunting only? A percussion may...

    Any body Remember These?

Am I the only one who doesn’t really care for carving on a rifle stock?

Sometimes a little bit of bling looks pretty good to me.

    Making cane/bamboo powder measures

A round file works pretty good, you can also take a small dowel rod and cut a slot in it, put some sand paper in the slot, chuck it up in a drill and sand the inside, doesn't have to be perfectly smooth.

Am I the only one who doesn’t really care for carving on a rifle stock?

I have never read so much hogwash justifying a plain jane tasteless gun. From the John Schreit rifle (and before that in Europe) until the later part of the percussion era a QUALITY rifle had some carving and usually some engraving, yes, a cheaply made barn gun can have good lines but any maker...

Am I the only one who doesn’t really care for carving on a rifle stock?

I like it when it is done tastefully and on the right gun, it is out of place on a trade gun and some of the later percussion era rifles were overdone with carving and inlays. I am still on the fence with Mr. Kibler's CNC carving but some originals like the Edward Marshall gun are gorgeous.

    My first Muzzleloader

Ignore the naysayers, it looks like a very nice lock and an equally nice trigger set. If the barrel is of the same quality, you may have a very good shooter. Get some .490 balls and some 15 to 18 thousand patch material and load up 40 grains of 2 or 3F and shoot a group then do a group at 45...

    Priming powder for flintlock

Your the exception, ever go to shoot prairie dogs out west for a week, you need more than the masters will let you store.

    Priming powder for flintlock

Buy two pounds every time you get a chance until you have built up your inventory. Take a trip out of state and buy a case. Have a friend in another state buy a case from an online dealer and go get it. I quit obeying the masters a long time ago.

    Trying too hard?

Cut a foam earplug in half and stick half of it in the hammer slot, down further than the nipple, the foam will cushion the hammer fall and protect the nipples. Best to dry fire with the one you're going to actually shoot. The foam earplug will stay in place for quite a number of shots and when...

    Trying too hard?

Ed, try dry firing every night for about a week before your next outing. Your goal is to keep the sights from moving when the hammer falls. Muscle memory will then improve your shooting at the range.

Kibler fowler - Has anyone shot round ball?

And furthermore, I do not think the danger of overloading a smoothbore (turning into a centerfire) is mitigated by restricting it to shot charges only. The same kind of yahoo that would put 100 grains of 3F behind a roundball is the same kind of yahoo that would put 100 grains of 3F behind a...
