    Navy arms Kentucky flinter

Just yesterday I was looking at my navy arms .45 Kentucky rifle and am thinking about converting it to flintlock. It's a 1976 percussion model by the barrel marking. I guess I got at steal at $125. Seems like a decent gun though I haven’t fired it. The stock is an odd color and don’t know if...

    Bought a Smoker

You can always cold smoke delicate things. I built a smoke generator and a box that did a good job with cheeses, eggs, nuts etc. It smokes at ambient temperature and does not induce any heat into the box, pretty neat. I don’t have any pics of delicate things being smoked but here is the...

    Bought a Smoker

Should clarify, the 203 degrees mentioned is the internal temperature of the meat not the cooking temp. When that is met the meat comes out of the pit and placed in a cooler.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I made me a little primer horn. Here it is with the other things I made to get me started in shooting BP.

    Lyman sights?

It's a metric dovetail I suppose. I have Lyman tang mounted peep and their AEU globe front on my LH GPR. While it''s fine for target work I find that combination doesn't work with hunting situations where often times I cannot see because of the low light. I have made a couple of rear apertures...

    Walnut board

If it's relatively flat, run it through planer with some light cuts to expose the figure some. Same could be done with a wide belt sander. Every now and then I'll install 40 grit on my 38" and flatten pieces.itss pretty aggressive.

Is There Any Of You Guys That Use Vintage Tools When Building ML.

I am a builder of modern rifles and use modern CNC and manual machines along with some vintage and modern hand tools. My shop has most anything to perform metal and wood work. I just got into muzzle loading by purchasing a small collection as year or two ago. My son in law is pushing me to...

    $18 range box

Looking at this thread gives me encouragement to build me a box. My hang up is I shoot right out of my workshop. A box would help with originazation. It will be made of either spalted pecan or mesquite I have milled.

    CVA mountain rifle

Those were before pics. Here’s one I just took after applying the AF. I need a few coats of oil over it now.

Hmmm I see what you did there. Interesting😉

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I have seen a few CF rifle stocks made from it. Mesquite is a hard wood that doesn't grow all that straight. While it can have beautiful figure it's often full of stress cracks, voids , inclusions, beetle holes and ants. With that said it's a species that is very stable and doesn't shrink...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

The stock is maple and it's sitting on mesquite. Mesquite can range from a light pink to a deep reddish brown depending on maturity and exposure to the elements.

I stripped the finish off my early USA CVA mountain rifle and applied 2 coats of aqua fortis to it. Here are before and after pics

    CVA mountain rifle

Well I decided to refinish the stock on the CVA I have. Who’s knows what was used in the 70’s when it was a kit. I have nothing to lose.😂 Looking like it’s maple. I purchased some aqua fortis the other day and will try it on this stock. Here are a couple of pics of the stock before I do...

    Bought a Smoker

My target temp for pork butts and brisket is 203 with at least at hour rest. When wrapped and put in a cooler the temp will rise a degree or two. This has been good for me but do keep in mind every cut of meat is different. The ratio between fat and muscle is always going to be variable and at...

    Bought a Smoker

I am stuck in South Texas. Nothing but post oak, pecan, hickory and mesquite to cut and mill off the ranch. I smoked pork baby backs and some chicken halves today with mesquite. I mill a bunch of it for lumber and use drops for smoking.

Do you display your flintlock or other guns in your home

I built my home with my two hands a couple of years ago, before getting some BP rifles. This thread got me a thinking maybe I should display a few BO rifles. They are not worth much but look old and I think they might look ok on the wall somewhere in the living area. I'll have to run the idea by...

    Wood scrapers

Have you considered making your own? They are not hard to make, if you have some old handsaws or even circular saw blades they can be made into any shape scraper you desire.

    You call that a rifle.

Not a ML but my 50 BMG target loads uses 230 grs of powder behind a 750 gr bullet at about 2800fps With those amounts of powder a pound doesn't go very far. Some of my big magnums are consuming 100+ grains per load.
