How much black powder is too much?

Seems silly that we still debate/parrot the "unburnt powder" nonsense after all the years of testing. I have a 5inch 12bore Derringer. 50gr 3ff gives 550fps...150gr 3f will clear 1000fps..in 5 inches(!). Too much powder for the rifle is when the stock breaks. Too much powder for the shooter is...

    Flintlock flinching

When you are able to see exactly where the front sight is when your rifle fires...you will just feel it, and know where the ball went before the smoke clears. Anytime I can't "call the shot" I know it's because I had both eyes shut and my head out of the way. Flinching seems to run in cycles...

Loading down for a .62 flinter

I would have no hesitations about shooting 35 grs (or less) in your 62 caliber. Sure you're going to hit low at 100yrds, but for targets and Woods-walks, you might find it does just fine out to 50yards. If your shoulder seems okay with it,....just keep adding powder.

    Kibler Rear Sight

The closer the sights are to the barrel, the faster mirage will begin to distort your sight picture as the barrel heats up. So on a multiple shot woodswalk match, a taller sight will usually give you an "edge". Unless you're trying to split horizontal playing cards. You'll want be as close to...

What's the consensus on Kibler rifles Steel finish?

I like a deep brown Kibler...polished fire bluing optional.

Ya' never know what's up there.

We have no deer, so the lions live on elk. (Lion killed right near my cabin, but not by me.) Hard to imagine the carnage left behind After a Lion plays with an elk like a mouse... for hours! Kinnikinnick grows wild near one kill sight. Interesting that the lions ate most of the large...

    Fixing buttplate gap

Your picture shows the plate is low. And maybe needs a little hammer bump to lesson the angle.

    Flinching?

It can make a differences what side the sun is on. We tend to see one side of the sight better than the other if you're not shooting from shade. The other side of the sight being in the shadow makes you crowd windage way or the other. I've also seen Barrel Mirage bend the front sight after a...

    “Waterproofing” your lock

A cows knee won't stop water from running along the barrel channel, and right into the pan.

Starting to look for a flintlock

Long barrels give good velocity in a 58 Cal. 100gr. 2ffg Eynsford .570rb Kibler Colonial And 110gr will chronograph 1850fps... I've never chronographed really big loads.

    “Waterproofing” your lock

Just use lube... you can just about swim with your rifle rigged this way.

    Colonial load

Smaller ball with a thicker patch will probably help you. At short 50yard ranges my 58cal likes any load I use. From 45gr 2ff, all the way through 120 grains of 3fffg Swiss, the balls hit the same spot.

    December 2023 Postal Match

Well I went out and shot my targets. Set up my little wall tent with the intentions of ringing in the new year "proper".... made it till 11:30, but it's 18° and no stove in the tent. I read about 50 pages of Osborne Russell's Journal of a Trapper by the fire light and then the Buffalo robe...

    Foster slugs

As I recall they shot pretty well. Figuring a way to get them to stop tumbling in a smooth bore was the best part. I was shooting them from a 62 Cal smoothbore rifle and a Howdah pistol. As I recall they didn't weigh much more than a roundball, they were just a fun novelty to play with. And...

    Vent pick- just how small?

So sad what we have allowed to happen 😢 Tyranny is what this is...and we vote for it. Lawmakers wasting time and money, making criminals out of folks for enjoying such a simple pleasure as collecting a few feathers!(?) Meanwhile cats and wind generators kill 1,000s of birds every day...

    Utah regulation chnges

Muzzleloaders are easily as capable as any centerfire when loaded with modern projectiles and mounted with high-powered precision optics. Armed with an electronic laser range finder, 1200 yards and beyond is now considered long-range "hunting"(?)!. Crazy to even call this hunting. This is why...

    Foster slugs

They tumbled and keyholed for me within just a few yards. So I hot glued a folded narrow strip of wool blanket scrap into the hollow base. The strips were about 3/8" wide x 4"or5" long, folded in half, stuck in the back and glued. This drag-stablized them very nicely. With the streamer tails...

Anyone tried the re-enactor powder ??

Goex "5fa" works great and is very accurate for all range work, woods-walk, and plinking applications. It's an unglazed mix of 2, 3,and 4f powder. I think the 4ffff part really improves its ignition performance in a flintlock, way more reliable than Swiss 3fffg. Not sure what products are...

I think you have a real nice Mountain Man Club up there. They shoot someplace around the Flathead area I think, you ought to look them up. Lots of fun shooting with a club every month! Sure helps you to hone your skills and get ready for the hunting season. Pyrodex just adds another challenging...
