Uberti 1860 hand replacement (broken spring)

Fitting a new hand properly takes me to a whole nother level of patience.. I've had success with a women's bobby pin for repairing a broken handspring too... it's sure worth the effort to try it first with your original hand.

    December 2023 Postal Match

Nicely done Jim K!! I think this might be only the second perfect target we've seen this year.

Once you figure it out, I believe you'll get the most enjoyment from shooting patched round balls. 58 caliber round ball will really pound an elk! If your bore is good and you're accuracy suffers, it's almost always the patch. Locate your fired patches, and if they're blown to shreds that's...

    Pedersoli locks bad?

No matter how good the lock is, you will never get past the Patend breech...which will make you feel like throwing that POS like a golf club when it plugs-up 🤣

Is That Seasoning or Fouling On My Patch?

What you most likely have is a tiny little spot of hard carbon fouling adhered somewhere in the bore. I've seen it a hundred times in BPCR because you can see the whole length of the barrel. Wrap your Jag in a little piece of "Gray" Scotch-Brite (not red, not green, not steel wool),.... Gray...

Will this leather work for a cows knee?

Just seal your frizzen up well with stiff lube and go hunting. Cow's knee won't stop water from traveling along the barrel and flooding your prime. They're great at costing you shots at game, and they look terrible doing it lol When you gotta to shoot, shoot!

big velocity change with same charge weight

Yes, but if you're used to Pyrodex, the old Owen is going to seem pretty underpowered.... it'll be quite consistent and reliable though.

    Rear sight

I'm not sure what kind of file it is but it's the smallest cheapest little flat file in my Arsenal.. I just turned it on edge and went to work. I wish I had a narrower file, the one I used is roughly 5/64" wide. It works very well in low overcast light. But I sometimes have windage issues when...

    SOLD Great Pistol

Frontier is right though. For whatever reason you clearly took a long time cutting out and adding the pistol picture to a new background I want to buy your pistol. But it's easy to have someone's account hacked. Will you please take a new photograph of your pistol in your "left hand" that...

big velocity change with same charge weight

Pyrodex needs to be firmly pressed by the projectile for consistency. You probably had a little fouling ring that prevented your ball/bullet from seating firmly onto the powder charge...this makes the load just burp. It also occurs (even with real BP) when folks use a short-starter while...

big velocity change with same charge weight

Welcome to the wonderful world of Pyrodex....seriously, buy some real powder. Blackpowder rifles shoot best with BlackPowder.

    November Postal Match Target

This was a great Target and I could sure see it! My first shot went right into the 10 Ring, but my rifle was loaded with 110 grains of Olde Eynsford because I was hunting for Elk earlier in the day.. Wow(!) that really got my attention!.. lol My next shot was my normal target charge of 50...

    Rear sight

I filed the microscopic v-notch into a nice Square notch on my Kolonial. My scores improved on Woods-walks and in our Forum postal matches after I did that.

Pedersoli 20 gauge Howdah wad punch size

I use real thick vegetable-tanned saddle leather and a 5/8" punch for my Pedersoli Howdah with fine results.... loose birdshot seems to pattern better out of the Howdah if I use a small ball of real sheeps wool over the powder and then a wad over the shot...also use the same 5/8 leather wads in...

    Pietta 44

Maybe.. and it does help when I have you on the phone. But it takes a lot less skill to sand out thread restriction on a Remington. Little twist of the barrel will bring your windage into perfection. Easy to have a Colt completely screwed up in a matter of seconds with a file. Arbor length...

    Pietta 44

Most Remington's have bore restriction where the barrel screws into the frame. Until the restriction is lapped out they will not shoot well. Drive an oversized ball down the barrel from the muzzle with the cylinder removed. Now put a little oil on the ball, and carefully realign the rifled...

    Toe Plate on your rifle

Almost all original rifle barrels were between between 40 and 50 inches, some even reaching 60 inches... the Jaeger rifles were the only short rifles that I know of... the Hawken was mostly cap lock so it wasn't included in my reference to the 44in drop tube... aka "barrel"

    Toe Plate on your rifle

The toeplate is never facing me when I load my rifle. The geometry of the buttstock kind of lends itself to be facing the other way. With modern shoes it seems like a good trick but we get an extra point for traditional footwear during our Woods-Walk, so I don't suppose moccasins would do much...

50/50 Dawn and Water patch lube?

Napa soluble cutting oil/water is about as good as it gets. Oils as it cleans with every loading. Even if patches dry out, you still have the oil in them. Detergent soaps leave your metal vulnerable to corrosion...and they work no better than the soluble oil.

    Bridger Mountain men shoot

The club got together for a few more Woodswalks this season. Sure had fun with everybody. This year we even added a Plains game venue with Antelope and Buffalo. To add to the challenge we made some little cardboard brown-head cowbirds to sit on the back of the Buffalo. These are very tiny...
