Is there a way to postpone cleaning a ml?

Montana weather is pretty forgiving I guess. I stripped the bluing from a brand new 1858 Remington with vinegar. Then left it very dirty hanging on a nail in the barn for 9 months. Just wiped the ash out of it and zero rust. My current ranch companion is an old CVA 50cal single shot pistol. I...

    long barrel vs shorter

Black powder is very slow. I'm surprised at how many challenges we face on this forum alone,...just to get a little truth spread as fact. Let's look at the 204 Ruger, 220swift etc.. almost 5,000 ft per second(!) with a tiny pinch of smokeless powder and a little 18" to 24 inch barrel. We can't...

    Round ball spin.

You can clearly see the patched roundball expanded to fit/fill the rifling grooves. And No this did not happen when I loaded it because it was a hunting round and it was easy to load with just my ramrod.

    Round ball spin.

No it is not. The Davenport formula for example. BP can even be used as a rocket propellant when compressed properly, because it burns slowly from the rear to the front.

    Round ball spin.

I shoot a lot of very hard wheel-weight balls from my Kolonial. The hard balls seriously crater 1/2" mildsteel targets that we use on our woods walk. I cast the balls with a Lyman mold that leaves quite a sprue. Upon examination of the craters in the steel, it is very clear to see that the...

    Round ball spin.

Some may look right at this photograph and still not understand...But oh well. Here's a fully upset/obturated .570 round ball kicked in the pants with 120 grains of Olde Eynsford. Gases don't slam into the back of the ball, the powder column does. The "solid" power column of the slow burning...

    Rust Brown question

I was under the impression that heating the metal to a temperature too hot to touch was what evaporated the product and stops the rusting process. I feel that I've had good success browning with LMF.

Powder charge. How much powder do you use.

That is the Davenport formula....and it is wrong.

Powder charge. How much powder do you use.

100gr of 2f Olde Eynsford gives me 1820 ft a second from my 44" Kolonial. Almost exactly what the ballistic program shows with 3f Swiss. Davenport erroneously suggests 134gr is my max powder burn before "unburnt" powder is ejected from the muzzle. Just for fun I entered 500gr into the...

Powder charge. How much powder do you use.

This also demonstrates that the Davenport formula is useless and false. More powder equals more velocity until grossly overloaded. There's no such thing as wasting powder, unless you spill some or miss. That being said, the fun level goes way down in a hurry, it's even less fun if your stock...

    June Postal Match

Thank you Gary. Not my best showing. But I was very happy to be able to call my shots...the only shot to break center with my rifle went right into the bullseye, it felt so good. Lone Watti pistol has been such a challenging quest to learn. Sure have made some amazing shots with it...but with...

    Black powder revolver for protection

I think the answers are different when the question is being asked in a Traditional Muzzleloader "Hunting" section. For hunting a Remington 1858 is very comforting and fun to carry along for bear, lion, tooth and fang. Or if you want to pop a coyote, or other vermin when you're hunting grouse...

    Photos from "Desert Expedition 1864"

Great pictures! I believe that is called a "Medicine Wheel" if it's native in origin...could be ancient, or could be from someone last fall.

    Poo Poo Pietta #2

Guys buy JB by the pallet to rebuild blown aluminum engine blocks of 300mph top-fuel dragsters... tensile strength is amazing. JB weld will not take shock. It is amazing stuff for some things, but I've had it fall right off at times. I soldered a tab on a Pietta and it has lasted a couple...
