Crimean War 1851 Colt Navy Rig?

I found an original holster for these a few years ago. You can see a discussion thread on the British Militaria Forums. I passed the holster to our host over there which he can keep in the Crimean case of the museum at Bisley. Initially I thought it was for the Adams or Tranter but Bill said...

CVA Frontier Carbine - Button vs Hook and Interchangeable Barrels

Consider just buying a whole spare rifle rather than a barrel. They can be picked up occasionally for very modest money!

    Percussion Locks L&R vs Pedersole

Same. My Pedersoli percussion lock (Charles Moore pistol) works well. So do all my percussion arms.

Wild Inaccuracy with Pedersoli P53 Enfield.

I love my P-H 1858. One is barely enough. I suggest anything 'custom made' has a higher likelihood of leaving you unhappy than buying a good used one. What you could do is use that 'custom project' risk to make something you cannot get as factory - and rifle muskets, like Colt's revolvers, are...

    Wild inaccuracy with CVA .50

I had my flintlock start throwing wild shots, and told myself I hadn't changed anything. Then I realised I had been using biggish patches and folding them over the ball to reduce bruising with the short starter. That meant they were not letting the balls fly free of the patch at the muzzle!

    Wild inaccuracy with CVA .50

Verrry interesting. I am going to try some Holy Black, and raise the charge - on the theory that the balls may need more spin rpm. I cleaned the bore with carby cleaner, looking for grunge down there. Maybe, but I always clean with HOT water anyway. I got Loc-tite, for the set trigger...

    Wild inaccuracy with CVA .50

Its a slow twist, one in 66" seems right. I remember my introduction to muzzleloading, my second rifle was a CVA .50 I bought in the Northern Territory, Darwin, which is a bit wild west. I loaded up the basic recommended starting load, a grain for every hundredth of inch - fifty grains. (I got...

    Wild inaccuracy with CVA .50

Don't know. I will get some next time!

    Wild inaccuracy with CVA .50

Lots of good ideas here. I always use lots of hot water, but a subcaliber scraper would help I am sure. Black powder yes, I love the stuff but we have a lot of trouble getting enough so I switched to Pyrodex. Just wondering if I make up a lead taper slug would it show wear at the bore? I once...

    Wild inaccuracy with CVA .50

I have been very annoyed to find I cant hit a bull in the bum with my CVA, since the old ticking I used for patches ran out. I am talking six to ten inch groups at 50m benchrest, with flyers! Yet I had some years ago got six of thirteen into five inches at 100m! I use too many rifles, so have...

Wild Inaccuracy with Pedersoli P53 Enfield.

Brilliant. Thanks! I have been noticing that the fine and full and other ways of using an iron sight are just not understood now. From my various muzzleloaders and early cartridge rifles its a LOT of variation in sight pictures.

    Washing Pillow ticking

I just ran out of my old .015" ticking. Bought new at the same shop, and the ball jammed in the muzzle. 0.022"! Also tried my old hi-vis workshirts, 0.013". Groups were very big. Found 100% cotton duck is the right thickness, 0.016". Group shrank to half but not good enough. Tried more lube...

Wild Inaccuracy with Pedersoli P53 Enfield.

I shoot a PH Enfield 1858 two-band, and it shoots damn well because someone did the work for me beforehand, and I bought the mold with the gun. Enfield 577s typically are fussy and like heavier bullets. The lighter .577 Lee mold, for instance, doesn't shoot in most of them. In Australia, one...

Where are all you Aussies and Kiwis!?

Hi heelerau, there are indeed a few of us here... I shoot at Perth MLC, first owned muzzleloaders from about 1978 (shooting at Albany Western Australia) but resumed club shooting about 7 years ago.

    Matchlock age

If you want some really good advice on development of matchlocks and such early types, the posts of the user 'Matchlock' (the late Michael Tromner) at Vikingsword.com appear to be the worlds greatest study of actual original arms and period documents, at least that I have seen. Blockmore's books...

G'day! I am at PMLC myself. What matches are you shooting so far?

New lock for Pedersoli Charles Moore 45

OK Its working well now. 1) fit lockplate into recess and fit barrel; the cutout for the nipple drum needed a bit of filing to let the barrel down to its bedding. Set it so the drum is normally in contact with the lockplate. 2) Remove hammer and twist in vise to get the nose aligned with the...

    Charles Moore pistols

Excellent. I have just been working on mine, and intend to post some comments.

    Wheel lock syndrome

I have been collecting pics and reading and studied Lauber way back and Bolek's extensive picture library. I think the main point is that the lock spindle and bearing/bridle are right below the pan, and the pan therefore has to be 'wide' (in the direction perpendicular to the lockplate) enough...
