Buying a BP rifle on this site

Why did you recommend a 54 caliber? I think we should know what his intended use for the muzzleloader before making any recommendations. Is it simply target shooting? Hunting squirrels? Hunting deer or other game? What ammunition budget does he have? If only target shooting a 32 might work. Does...

    T/C Hawken round ball size

I have a 45 caliber Pedersoli, Missouri River, Hawken, percussion rifle. I get my best results with a .445 round ball and a .012 patch.

    Need ideas

I know those CO2 dischargers don't always work. I once tried that several times to no avail. I took the gun (pistol) to a gunsmith and was told that the CO2 dischargers are not always successful. I could not get that ball out, so I let the gunsmith do it.

    Stay In Your Lane!

You should have set them straight. If someone is being rude to me, I point it out to them. I figure if they don't know any better, or they are just rude and/or obnoxious they deserve what I or someone else will dish out.

    Wiping between shots

With my Pedersoli, 45 caliber, Missouri River, Hawken percussion rifle I have learned, via trial and error, that I get better results if I wipe the bore after every 3 shots. I run a spit-patch down the bore, flip it over and do it again. I then do the same procedure with a dry patch. --- In the...

    Advice For New Guy Requested

If you intend to shoot it a lot, I would not get a brass frame revolver. The brass will get out of time and the gun will not work properly. The Confederates had this issue during the Civil War. When the pistols went out of time the soldier turned it in for another one. The brass was then melted...

    Goex 3F on GunBroker $65 a Pound

I don't think you can blame Gun Broker for charging sales tax. I believe that is a federal or state regulation. It is all about the government getting their hands on more of our money. GB is just required to collect that tax.

Poll: What do you use your muzzleloader for?

I have hunted deer with a muzzleloader many years ago. Now, I use my muzzleloaders for target practice, friendly competition shooting with The Ohio Valley Muzzle Loading Gun Club and Rendezvous competition with Rendezvous Groups, primarily Jennings Creek Council, in Van Wert, Ohio.

    Goex Upsetting Dealers

There's nothing wrong with making a little profit. If they lose money or just break even, they will eventually stop doing it at all.

    Goex Upsetting Dealers

That's part of the problem. People don't want to pay market value for anything. I work in a gun store, and we don't stock some ammunition because people won't buy it at the current price.

Looking to get my first flintlock rifle

Over the years I have owned and used several Thompson Center percussion rifles. Every one of them performed well. However, about 2 years ago, I acquired a Pedersoli, Missouri River, Hawken percussion rifle in 45 caliber. It outperforms every T/C rifle I have ever owned. (Of course, it cost 3...

    Howdy all from Shenandoah Valley

Welcome from Ohio. My Propst family settled in what is now Pendleton County, West Virginia. John Michael Propst (my 7th great-grandfather) was a veteran of The French and Indian War.

reclaiming lead from car and motorcycle batteries

I once applied for a job at a plant that recycled batteries. They would take old batteries apart and salvage all reclaimable material. The safety gear and procedures were extensive. Upon arriving at work, you had to change out of your street clothes and put on a HazMat suit. You had to wear eye...

    Woodsrunner 45 Caliber

I have had 32 caliber, 45 caliber, 50 caliber, 62 caliber and 69 caliber rifles. Overall, I feel the 45 is the most accurate (at least for me). The 62 and 69 were smoothbores. Currently, all of my muzzleloaders are 45 and 62 caliber.

    What are your favorite targets?

When I was 15, I took one of my mom's cast iron skillets and used it as a target for my first muzzleloader. I hung the skillet from a post and shot it several times until she caught me. I got yelled at. The skillet had no real damage from my 32 caliber balls. My gun was confiscated for about a...

    What are your favorite targets?

A friend of mine was bragging that he could hit a golf ball 200 yards. I told him that with my rifle I can shoot his golf ball at 300 yards.

    Dixi Gun Works Disappoints.

You are correct. After Turner died his 3 stepsons took over the company. One of them passed away not too long ago. I do hope this company can revitalize itself. I have had many good experiences with them in the past. In the early 1990's I did manage to visit the shop in person.

    Dixi Gun Works Disappoints.

Since the old man (Turner Kirkland) died Dixie Gun Works has been going downhill. I get less and less from them. I usually opt for The Log Cabin Shop or Track of the Wolf first these days.

Okay, this goes against the grain for me but....

Don't feel bad for not taking that shot. I was once hunting with a group of 8 people. I was standing behind a big tree, on the edge of the woods. A doe walked right up to me. She was probably about 20 feet away from me. I aimed my shotgun (it was when Ohio only allowed shotguns) and was about to...
