Just picked up this trade gun today

Been there and done that! Steam can help bring some of it up before sanding.

Just picked up this trade gun today

I have long arms for my height, 73 inches from fingertip to fingertip. But my shoulders are a bit bulky.

Trade rifle rehab. Good show! Wish it was on Youtube. 13.5 is ok for length of pull. I think 13 is better. Maybe I am built funny. Add a coat to the mix and 13.5 starts to feel long. My favorite rifle is 13.25 and feels good without a coat.

    Lyman GPR flint breaking

Pictures would help. There is a bit of art and science to making a flintlock work well. You definitely need the right sized flint. 1. When the lock is in the fired position you want the edge of the flint pointing in the center of the pan. 2. You want the edge of the flint to contact across the...

    Is the Woodsrunner that easy?

The most time consuming part of the build for me was polishing the brass parts. If you can sand wood you can do this. The barrel can be cold blued in 10 minutes with easily available products. You can do this!

    Your experience echos mine.

    Clay Smith Trade Gun Build

It seems so. The only thing I am wondering about is the strength of the mainspring. Compared to the Kibler I have the cocking effort on this one seems light.

    Clay Smith Trade Gun Build

Thought I would throw in a couple of pictures of the lock I bought at the Kalamazoo show for comparison.

That is pretty! I bought one of these at the Kalamazoo show and I have to say it looks to be a bit better finished.

Building ME a NW Trade Gun ! :)

9 On some steel (knives) I have made there is a layer of decarbed scale that has to be removed to get to the hard steel. That probably isn’t the case here, but I am trying to offer some hope! The worst case would be if the file was one of the new ones that isn’t made from high carbon steel.

    Got my Woodsrunner But!

Shipping services say, “Crush proof? Challenge accepted!” Kibler’s shipping container is the best I’ve seen. They are good people to do business with. Shipping anything has gotten more risky since 2020. Of course a lot of things got broken then.

I did spend a lot of money there!

Building ME a NW Trade Gun ! :)

So many questions! What kind of steel do you use for the half sole? Do you harden the piece then soft solder it in place trying to keep the temperature in the tempering zone for the hard insert? Too bade the good case hardening compound from Brownells (Kasenit) isn’t available, you could just...
