When I did my SMR I used two coats of aqua fortis, blushed after each coat, then one coat of permalyn sealer on the exterior with two coats in the inlets, then Tried and True varnish oil. Looks great!
I think you can thin the permalyn finish and it will act like the sealer. I used the Tried and...
When I assembled my Kibler I used both Permalyn, and Tried an True Varnish Oil. One coat of permalyn on the exterior, and if I'm remembering right, two coats in the inlets. Then I used four coats of the Tried and True on the exterior.

If I need to hit stuff while it's in a vise, I use a 4" jaw bench visewith leather pads to protect any necessary surfaces.
When I wanted one, and the Kibler site showed 'out of stock', I contacted Brie to find out how long before they re-stocked. She took my info and they had one to me in short order at Kibler's lower price.
