I found this set at a small gun shop, What is it? a factory set or a special issue? Or???

Larry, Welcome to group therapy! The 575213 Mold is a common Minie Ball mold used in the war of Northern Aggression. It is .575" in diameter and approximately 505 grains weight. That is quite a collection you acquired. BTW I still have the long rifle I bought from Turner Kirkland in the...

How I lube cut at the muzzle patches

I use a dry lube that doesn't get all over everything when my shooting bag or on a bench. It is just a common mixture of alcohol and oil. I use about a 8:1 mix alcohol to castor oil mix it in a quart jar and dip the cut length of patching into it. The patching is then laid on a screen wire...

    Bees wax

I will combine both subjects here. Many years ago when I was a working pipefitter I used beeswax to lubricate the joints in my folding Lufkin rules.

    Rifle Purchase

The hammer appears to be welded back together. The only way to find out if it is a shooter is to take it to the range and work with it. I bet you can make it shoot well. I wouldn't worry too much about the aluminum lock unless over a period of time the hammer bearing axle begins to wallow out...

Using car wax as a preservative

I have used past wax on browned barrels since the 70's. It works well for a protectant and I like the look of it.

    An unusual Hammer

Bayer, I am very impressed by the craftsmanship in the cappers. I have never seen one like these before. On the one, looking at it the cap pusher arm it appears that it can pivot and vary its radius as it follows the spiral trough. Is the bail used to wind a clock type spring? It is a very...

Final 1857 Napoleon half scale cannon final

Phil, Nice job! I did not see your identifying stamp on it. It needs your name and date. How are you going to finish the carriage, stain and varnish? Great project!

    Over the gun game !!!

I sent a barrel in to Bobby Hoyt on the 7th of December and it just came back today. Looks great. I noticed his shipping charge was $14.95. That is for a carbine barrel. So, just over two months for complete turnaround. The charge to reline and cut new rifling was $125. I'm happy.

Question on issues with breech plug fitting

Just remember that you do not have to heavily torque down the breech plug. There is no need to pre-stress the threads of the plug. You have done a very nice job of fitting it as it should be. It should take no more pressure than a moderate push on an 8" wrench to properly seat it. Some...

    Single set triggers

I have used a few single set triggers over the years. The last one I used was a L&R single set. I bought it very soon after they started producing that model. I was very unhappy with it. I had to go into it and do some very careful shimming and adjusting before it was acceptable. This was...

Is muzzle velocity affected by cap types? (Musket vs #11)

When using my machine rest and chronograph with pistol barrels I have found no differences between brands of caps.

45man What material did you use for the eagle in the cheekpiece? It doesn't appear to be metal yet it is covering a wide territory. Barry

    Looking for some guidance here

I would strongly suggest getting a single shot pistol for your first muzzleloader. It will give you the needed experience of handling a pistol and black powder before you go into revolvers.
