Looking to buy a used flintlock, how do I know if it will throw good sparks?

To me same as CVA, Traditions and Pedersoli. My opinion only based on what I have read over the years and in several cases personal experience.

Looking to buy a used flintlock, how do I know if it will throw good sparks?

All depends on the quality of the lock. If the lock is Chambers or Kibler's you are good to go for sure. CVA, Pedersoli, Traditions are a tossup. Just my opinion.

Looking into getting my first flintlock rifle

I'll second Johnny Too Tall and say go with the best. I started cheap and was so sorry I did. A Kibler SMR looks like the ticket for you. Good luck but buy the best.

New to smoothbore and what I like for a RB loading charge

Very nice gun and case. If I am reading it right, you put the 1/8 cushion wad on top of the roundball. I'm getting ready to try roundballs in my 20 gauge. Thanks.

Whats some things you wish you knew about/had early on when you started shooting these?

I wish I had started out with a quality gun with a chambers lock on it. Kibler wasn't available then. Had a lot of misfires which convinced my hunting buddies flinters were a PITA that worked sometimes so they all went to inlines and avoided flint. So now I am the only one who shoots a...

    T/C stock refinish question

I've stripped three using Citristrip. One took a couple of coats. Then scraped and sanded them and put a Tung Oil finish on them. No idea what the original finish was. Good luck.

Restoration of a French 1786 musket

Pretty cool video. I did notice that when he pulled the barrel the underside was not anywhere near as rusted as the top. I know a lot of guys say to pull the barrel and wax/oil it to prevent rust. Others say not needed and I think that's pretty correct based on this example. Just my...

    Grandpa stories

My grandfather on my mother's side was killed shortly after my mother was born. He was a painter on the high metal electric towers in Bethlem, PA. He was painting on one that was supposedly shut off but wasn't. Don't know if the shock killed him or not but the 110+ foot fall surely did. My...

    Kibler Colonial Trigger Guard Wrong?

I suggest you talk to Jim Kibler. I would put Jim "in the know" better than anyone.

    Skychief Load Time line

I meant dampened powder from the olive oil seeping into the powder causing a possible miss fire. At minimum I would store muzzle down as azmtnman said.

When Do You Use Your Vent Pick?

To tell the truth I don't recall ever using mine and I have one on each gun.

    Skychief Load Time line

If you get shot Sunday night, would you even care? LOL Seriously, I think you would be OK but as they say better safe then sorry. Probably should at least try it and see when you are not hunting the next day rather than experiment and have a miss fire with that big turkey in front of you.

    Old Sturbridge Village Firearms/Militia Exhibit

It is a great place. My 5th great grandfather Joseph Marsh IV is buried in the Revolutionary War Soldiers Cemetery in Sturbridge. He was a corporal in Captain J Clapps Company of the 3rd Regiment of the Massachusetts Bay Militia commanded by Colonel Israel Chapen.

    Original or Replica ?

I'm no expert either however I do know that the GRICE 1762 is something that Pedersoli used and is not on the originals. Also, many of the originals had a pin through the top of the buttplate. I would vote replica.
