    Amusing/Ridiculous Muzzleloading Misconceptions...

Thanks guys lots of laughs there. About accuracy, just read a report from an English cavalry officer viewing the US forces prior to an attack. He was standing just outside a treeline with a fellow officer and a bugler All holding their horses. The round fired from the enemy marksmans...

    BOOK

Hi. I am new to muzzle loading and so eager for reading material. Just read "English Guns and Rifles George." I would recommend it. Although the title says English there is of course much reference to American guns. Covers from the 15th century to the development of unmentionable guns. Some...

    I bought an original SXS

I am sure that FELTWAD (as) got it right with the back boring (as) choke was not even thought of when your gun was made. My 1835 double 16g 30 inch shotgun barrels are actually flared at the muzzle a few thou.

    Rust patch?

Britsmoothy. You might call flash rusting "tarnishing" but it is rust and if left will develop. I do rust blue barrels so understand the process.

    Rust patch?

Be very wary of boiling water. I have shot black powder cartridges in my unmentionables for years and always cleaned with boiling water then oil. The boiling water heat dries the barrels a treat. Recently bought another hammergun similar year late 1800 and the boiling water flash rusts the gun...

    Barrel fit

Thanks.of course I can’t prove it’s age. It is obviously old, twist barrels .makers name on the action is Sherwood. He was a Portsmouth gunmaker and 1834 was the middle of his trading time. Proof mark is for black powder up to 1850, after which the bore size was added. This gun does not have...

    Barrel fit

The gun was made In1835 but appears to not have had much use. Where it’s been for nearly 200 years is anybody’s guess.

    Barrel fit

Thank you but you are obviously talking about a different gun to mine. There is no contact with wood until the barrels settle. It’s just metal to metal at the breach end.

    Barrel fit

The resistance comes as soon as the barrels are hooked. When forced down toward the wood it gets easier last bit to seat it Ito the wood is easy.

    Barrel fit

Of course I have lubricated the hook. Under lug spears to be a perfect fit. Thanks anyway. I will get it into a gunsmiths.

    Barrel fit

Hi I am new to percussion guns and have a question please. I have an 1835 percussion double shotgun with hook fit barrels. I feel that the barrel fit in the hook is a bit tight, they obviously should not be a loose fit, but how tight should they be? I have blacked the hook and there seems to be...

    WHY SHOOT REPRO GUNS

OK good folk as WB says ,I started it as a newcomer to muzzle loading. It did get a bit off track as most serious posts do but I thank you all I am satisfied as to why you guys shoot repro guns. Stay safe and have a lovely Christmas all. Dunks from the UK.

    Need advice breaking clays

I am new to muzzle loading. Just got my first gun a 16g 1835 English double percussion shot gun. I break clays cleanly out to 35 yards with 70grains of ffg and an ounce of 7 shot. 3mm hard waxed nitro card and half a cushion over shot soaked in oil. Lots of very close clays at my clayground...

    Water

It's an excellent water dispersant. It's not a very good lubricant and it's not a good rust proofer; Having said that I would hate to be without a can! Do you guys get ACF50? Now there's an excellent rust proofer Although I am sure petroleum based.

    Water

FLASH RUSTING.. I am new to muzzle loading but have been shooting black powder in my unmentionables for years. My method of cleaning has always been soapy water followed by boiling water which instantly dries every bit of the barrels. Then oil. Never any rust. Tried this with my new 1835 muzzle...
