    eBay Flintlock Lock

That's not it coming out horizontally from beneath the sear spring? I've never messed with a flintlock (or a caplock lock) but I think that its where the trigger would rest

    eBay Flintlock Lock

Howdy all! Well, I bought a Flintlock Lock on eBay. Unmarked and I don’t know jack about it! I imagine that someone here knows what it is. Anyway - I guess I can check heat treatment with a file? Plan to mess with it a bit to learn how these work, maybe mount it to plywood. Phil

    Ferric nitrate crystals test.

Also purchasing some stuff to work on browning/bluing solutions. Have Ferric Nitrate and Ferric Chloride and I’ve purchased nitric acid and Copper III Sulfate. What’s odd is that I bought the chemicals from the Walmart website and got the nitric acid delivered with no Hazmat - which in a way I...

    Black walnuts

We used them back when I was a kid to dye some t-shirts in cub scout camp. The result? A sickly yellow stain that looked like sweat stains. However - I think the concentration can be increased by a relatively smaller amount of liquid and addition of a polar solvent like DMSO or maybe even...

    Black walnuts

This is an older topoic but I was researching different stains and black walnut hull came up. It has tannins in it and an organic compount called juglone. Its relatively insoluble in water but soluble in DMSO. I think I'll have to make some water/DMSO based stain with walnut hulls and compare...

    Ferric nitrate crystals test.

and to answer my own wondering - using a base like a sodium carbonate will create sodium nitrate and ferric carbonate which will precipitate out as a solid - so thats a no-go.

    Ferric nitrate crystals test.

The experiment was to make a known concentration with a solution of mainly ethanol (so that it dries fairly quickly) and some water (to raise the grain a little, not a lot. Ferric nitrate cystals are very soluble in water and alcohols so this could have just as easily been isopropanol (isopropyl...

    Ferric nitrate crystals test.

Howdy all! Haven’t even gotten my workbench built and I’m working on stock stain! I had been reading about making Ferric nitrate (iron nitrate) stain from iron and nitric acid. While I enjoy playing with strong acids as much as the next guy it seemed like a bit of a mess. So I ordered Ferric...

Thickness of brass in Kibler kits

Perfect. I found some strips in 1/8 (or 3mm.. either way) and I'll probably get some copper too for practice. I bought one of the practice stocks from Kibler in Woodsrunner so I can practice carving and might cut some brass bits up and try some inlay too. I may do none of it on the rifle but hey...

Thickness of brass in Kibler kits

Howdy all! I am ordering a Kibler kit and in the meantime on the wait im going to order one of their practice stocks for carving and maybe even some finishing practice and some brass for practice on engraving brass. What I don't know is what thickness brass stock to order so its an apples to...

Howdy from West by God Virginia

Howdy all, I think I heard about this group over on Facebook's Vintage Muzzleloading forum. My background - C&R rfile collector and dabbler in cleaning up old rusty junk. I have owned a few blackpowder rifles, my favorite being a .58 cal musket made by Miroku. Other than fitting some mauser...
