    Keeping your powder dry

    Anyone ever heard of this?

Potter Co New Years Eve Doe

Thank God for the DMAP tags! I hunt just a bit east in Elk County and as a non-resident that's the only way I can get a doe tag.

    Flintlocks and Black Powder

This brings up another question. Being an ultra safe hunter/shooter my entire life I concluded that the safe/legal way to transport a Flintlock is with the hammer all the way down and the frisson all the way up?

    Flintlocks and Black Powder

I'm a rookie. Are you referring to powder down the barrel finding its way into the pan?

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I recently bought a Traditions PA pellet, which I am told is nothing more than a marketing toy. I cleaned it today, I adjusted the trigger, I installed a new touch-hole liner, and cut apart an old leather coat to make a cow's knee. Oh, and I fondled it a little as well.

    Flintlocks and Black Powder

Yeah. I guess if I had an adamant opinion against using it as a main charge, I would go to the extent of testing it? Or at least sponsoring a test by a responsible party? As a complete and total rookie, I would think any powder would have a pressure threshold ...no?

    Flintlocks and Black Powder

Wouldn't it be easy enough to prove/disprove? I watched a video of some guys who loaded smokeless powder in a Flintlock and remotely triggered it with a ballistics gel dummy. The dummy died a horrible death! Load it up with a little too much 4F, trigger it remotely, and see what happens? Video

    Keeping your powder dry

Dumb? Nice! I didn't say the powder was damp. I "asked" if powder being exposed to damp conditions (not raining, just damp) would be reason enough to put some desiccant packs in the powder? So let me rephrase the question. Is there any potential negative to putting desiccant packets in your...

    Flintlocks and Black Powder

Lawyers say a lot of really dumb things. Fifty uears ago, your car owners manual explained how to set the valve timing, now it will tell you not to drink the battery acid.

    Keeping your powder dry

Under normal circumstances, I would not ever worry about a few grains of powder. But given the fact that I had to beg to get a hundred grains or so of 4F, I would be out pretty soon. I probably primed and emptied my gun 15 times between Friday and Saturday and until I can find a pound of 4F, I...

Nothing got "wet" but was just exposed to high humidity for a while.

    Flintlocks and Black Powder

I am really enjoying this thread. I love it when people are absolutely convinced of something because they heard it said ....... It's like the raging debate about bullets ricocheting. People see a tracer round go sideways and they think that all bullets ricochet when in fact the bullet didn't...

    Keeping your powder dry

I have read that black powder absorbs moisture and ambient humidity pretty easily. This weekend I did some hunting in Pa. and it was damp out. Our only way to get an opportunity was to put on small drives through thickets and clearcuts. This meant priming the pan for 20-30 minutes and then...

    Flintlocks and Black Powder

I was lead to believe that 4f was easier to get into the touch hole?

I have so much to learn!

Yeah, I found a pound of FFF Goex and will keep looking. The decision to buy the gun was a last minute thing so we could do some more hunting.

    Sorry .... duplicate

I have so much to learn!

I was aware of that. I came across a number of flintlock hunters this week who use pellets due to the convenience and have no issues. They have simply had to learn a few tricks like 4 or 5 grains of FFFF in the barrel prior to the pellets.
