Fancy Wood - Making my own grips

I haven't decided yet, but I think the next time I use the birch, I may try filling the cracks and inclusions with black CA glue. It'll have to be after heating the iron nitrate though. Will give a perfectly smooth finish if I do my job right. Not sure if that's any better than the "naturally...

    Uberti pock mark in frame

Sure, as long as you don't fill in the area behind where it broke through. That cavity behind the breakthrough was cut on purpose. It's where the hand spring rides. There's just a paper thin bit of metal in that area. If it bugs you that much, why not file up to the break. I've got several...

Fancy Wood - Making my own grips

The last coat of tung oil was finally dry enough to do a test fit. Wood swelled a bit, and there was a little excess oil in the grooves to remove, but was all pretty easy to clean up. I'm quite happy with how it's turned out. Pretty good for a first try. The next sets will be easier...

    Stoeger and Cimarron Walker

I doubt it. Tuning is incredibly expensive. Unless they specifically say that's what they're doing I'd be surprised if they even opened the boxes they get from the manufacturer.

I have not. Thought about doing antler or something, but haven't come across a source for big enough pieces yet. Would probably need to come up with a good air filtration solution before doing either. Actually, I really should do it anyway. Sawdust is bad enough.

    Stoeger and Cimarron Walker

Stoeger imports the straight Uberti branded guns I believe. Doubt there is going to be any price difference between the two as far as I've seen online unless one is finished differently or something. Maybe someone would prefer to have a gun with the only marks under the barrel. I've gotten...

Fancy Wood - Making my own grips

That shape would be moderately complex to model. Could be done, but might be no reason to re-invent the wheel. Start another thread and post up the files. Might be able to make what you have work. Lots of places out there do casting or CNC metal work, or even metal 3D printing.

Got the backstrap fitment a lot closer. Also took out all the scratches, stripped the old finish, and reblued. Fitment isn't perfect, but I may make unmentionable modifications to this revolver. If I do that, I'll need to refinish the frame anyway, and I'd really rather only do that once...

Fancy Wood - Making my own grips

I use several CAD programs, but for complex curved shapes like these grips Fusion360 is easiest. For 2D cam, I have been primarily using CamBam. Recently purchased VCarve desktop to do a 2D project for my brother, and it's been working much more smoothly, while not being quite as...

Fancy Wood - Making my own grips

It's storming pretty good out, so here's a rendering. Hopefully stuff calms down in a bit. It cut's an area roughly 29x31. Thanks!. Now I need a gun to match. Maybe I should test some CNC engraving on scrap. It's certainly possible to do some without a 4th axis. Just depends on the...

    Midway Sale Uberti 1860 Army

Got my 1860 today. It's in the same shape as the video, also an actual Uberti box, not one of the other importers. Nicest sale gun I've gotten from Midway. Some of the others were time sinks just to get functioning. If I could complain about anything, it'd be the wood fitup (still better...

Fancy Wood - Making my own grips

Didn't cut out any more maple grips, ran out of time, but I did get the center section done. Here's the maple sample at least with 1 coat of mostly dried tung oil. Probably give it another day before knocking back with 600 grit and adding another coat. Lined up one side and clamped it, then...

Fancy Wood - Making my own grips

Thanks. I'd wonder if there's even a market out there for it since no one seems to make wood grips. Lot of plastic, fake ivory, and fake bone. Was surprised I couldn't find anything. Might have to do with the cost of the guns themselves. They're so cheap that many might shy away from the...

Fancy Wood - Making my own grips

Gonna cut out the center section and get the birch grips glued together today. Might also cut out a pair of maple grips while I'm messing with the CNC. Here's the grips and the frame they'll be going on. Second picture shows the toolmarks that need removing. I could get rid of a lot of that...

Fancy Wood - Making my own grips

Got some more samples going. Top is of course the previously shown Iron nitrate. It's gone dull, but that's generally how the first coat of tung oil goes. Next is Laurel Mountain Forge Cherry on the left, nothing in the middle, and LMF Maple on the right. Third down is a light coating of...

Fancy Wood - Making my own grips

Yeah, Iron Nitrate is definitely in the running for the Maple, it's actually the first thing I try on most woods when experimenting, and the go to for maple. In fact, here's a test on the Birch. Maybe a bit darker than I'd have liked, but it really brings out the richness of the wood. Iron...

    Permadex Anti-Sieze

I've got the obligatory can of Permatex out in the shop, but I avoid using it for small stuff. As you all pointed out, it gets everywhere. I've got a small tube of Birchwood Casey choke tube lube. Basically the same thing, but that tiny tube avoids all the mess. A slix shot nipple wrench...

Fancy Wood - Making my own grips

Thanks. It's been working better than I expected. I thought curly wood would be giving me fits with the router bits. Even the Karelian Birch with its crazy grain and inclusions has cut like butter. Probably the high spindle speeds I'm running. My end mill life span may be short...

Fancy Wood - Making my own grips

So, I've got big hands, and navy sized grips really are just too small. The army grips are a bit better, and I've got a Pietta 1860 franken gun with navy grips I wanted to swap out. The triggerguard and backstrap parts were available, but no decent grips were popping up. Taylor firearms...

    Midway Sale Uberti 1860 Army

I ordered one of these this last weekend. We'll see what it's like when it gets here. I don't mind fixing some stuff as long as it's not terrible. With a Uberti I'm already resigned to the fact I'll have to fix the short arbor to make it reliable and repeatable out of the box.
