    Your Flintlock History

In 1999 I was working with a guy that was telling me about this New Year’s Day black powder shoot and the trick targets and how good people were and on and on. At this time I was completely shooting USPSA action pistol and some service rifle, trap skeet stuff like that. So I said no way people...

What would it take for the NMLRA to become a true "national" organization?

FPC for me. Both are worthy of membership. Back to the original topic, I’m not sure muzzleloading is popular enough to support a ”national” organization. Michigan has a state association, as do other states. That might be sustainable.

Lyman Deerstalker 100 yard Accuracy Achieved

That drop tube is a good idea. I did a little practicing with my ram rod on the scale yesterday to get a feel for the pressure, 35 pounds is a lot more force that I thought it would be. I Need to get my rust bluing job done so I can get back to the range and try some of these techniques.

Keeping Our Clubs Alive Article in MB

It’s most likely for the insurance, not for buying Wayne new suits. It’s a requirement of the NRA to be able to purchase insurance through them that 100% of club members be NRA members. I wouldn’t hold that against a club, or its members. It’s what some clubs have to do, the alternatives for...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I hope he comes back. Place is kind of boring without him. While I wait for his return I placed an order with the log cabin shop while I watch my barrel rust. Takes a long time in December in Michigan. I found the wife’s clothes steamer and can bump the humidity up a bit, it helps but not much.

big velocity change with same charge weight

Just speculating, -You’re right not ramming the ball down would cause that. Done that a few times. -Powder bridging/sticking in measure so less than full charge going in? -Powder spilling when loading and not going down the barrel? Done that a few times to. That‘s all the guesses I have...

Making Barnett N.W. gun for Ricky

Count me in too! As a person with no woodworking or metalwork skills I enjoy following your progress and I am really learning from you. I am almost inspired to try it myself, I remember the thread with you helping TDM and looks almost doable for me. Plus Every one I see you build makes me know...

Lyman Deerstalker 100 yard Accuracy Achieved

Nice shooting. Did you find that consistent loading pressure made much of a difference? I think it does but have no proof. As a follow up did you try different pressures or just go with 35 for consistency? In other words is consistency more important than the actual pressure? Keep us...

    Hawken accuracy problem

Do you have a friend, preferably experienced with Muzzleloaders, that can shoot it? This is the variable I would try to eliminate first. In my experience shooting black powder is a lot different than center fire, trigger control, grip, follow through, it’s just a different thing. If I shoot...

    Browning Kibler lock

I just did my SMR lock with LMF but rust bluing. These were sanded to 600 grit. i personally like the look of Jamie Hurleys better. Photo for your reference. It doesn’t really show how shiny the parts are because of the smooth metal finish.

"New" Investarms Hawken Carbine & I already Messed it up

Right, it looks like the tang is standing proud of the stock. Photos attached of mine for how it should look. Tang is recessed into the stock about 1/16th of an inch. Take the barrel off and see if you can get the tang down where it belongs. Lock plate may need to go further in, hard to tell...

    Rear sight issues - pedersoli

A big socket across the top of the dovetail to Hammer on is a good way of lowering the dovetail. Gives an even dovetail and doesn’t mark up the barrel.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Did the second application of LMF today. Temperature and humidity isn’t exactly conducive to what I am doing but since it is my first attempt I don’t mind it going slow. Pro tip: When you cut the PVC for your scalding trough the cut edges are RAZOR sharp. I tested it twice just to make sure!

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Giving rust bluing my first attempt. Two year old Kibler SMR that I used Jax black on. After a few thousand shots it was looking pretty rough. Spent he week sanding the part. Applied the LMF at 11:00 this mornin, now it’s a waiting game.

Flintlock flash guards for competitive tournaments

I have never used a shield on my guns at Friendship, or anywhere else. The only rule I can find on use is specific to bench rest and buffalo matches. 1260–SAFETY SHIELDS All flintlock bench rifles and flintlock buffalo rifles must use a safety shield. Offhand flintlock matches fired under the...

15 targets give or take a few. Some of my favorites: (some good ones are already listed) Cut the card bead or plaster balls hanging from a string pipe bent into an s shape steel plate with a hole in it you have to shoot through to hit another plate behind it. silhouette targets seem pretty...
