    Question for alloy/casting experts

My finger nail won’t scratch it much. But can I shoot it out of my guns with a patch just for shooting’s sake? Again, I don’t hunt. I’m worried about hard lead fouling though. Or should I buy a slingshot and use this stuff for slingshot ammo. I’m not being rude, I just want to know if this stuff...

    Question for alloy/casting experts

Could it be bismuth? Was that around at the turn of the century? Again, will it hurt my rifles or my smoothbore if I shoot this stuff? Target only. At the present, I do not hunt. I will have to make a new backstop if I shoot this stuff. I want to keep my good lead separate. This stuff melts...

    Question for alloy/casting experts

Here’s a very unscientific test. Two smacks with a hammer on an anvil. Left to right: 99% pure lead. Next, unknown mixture of lead to unknown alloy. Lastly, unknown alloy. Thanks, Jon

    Question for alloy/casting experts

Hello. I’ve had in my possession, for over 20 years, some window counter weights that came from a late 19th century to early 20th century building. I thought they were 100% lead but they are not. I found this out casting fish weights 20 years ago. The eyes of the tear drop shape weights would...

Anyone got a deer or bear this year? Our season opens this weekend, wondering how folks round the country are doing.

DStovall, that’s good to know. I haven’t even looked at the Fish and Game rules for hunting. I am totally not ready to hunt this weekend. Still have to sight in that .50. Just looked at their website and it seems you get more hunting days using a muzzleloader. I’m in zone 15. Jon

Anyone got a deer or bear this year? Our season opens this weekend, wondering how folks round the country are doing.

I’m in Arkansas. Can you not hunt with traditional muzzle loaders during modern gun season in these other states? I think you can here. I haven’t hunted in twenty years but I’m thinking about getting back out there. Traditional only though. Jon

Kibler SMR frizzen broke in two

Hello, 54ball. Yes, I agree with you. Jim Kibler told me himself that these things happen. Just a heat treat that wasn’t quite right? No one person’s fault. Although I’m sure these are heat treated in batches. It was more likely a poor casting. There’s going to be some bad ones in the bunch...

If FedEx stops delivering Black Powder…

Yes, this is what I meant. I do apologize about the price though. It was around $250. So it was more like $36 a pound. It was shipped UPS however. Jon

If FedEx stops delivering Black Powder…

I ordered 7 pounds of Swiss 3f Friday from Graff and Sons and got it today via UPS. They didn’t mind bringing to my house. Shipping and haz-mat was around $200. I should have ordered more. They didn’t show any GOEX 3f in stock or the OE or that’s what I would have bought. So that’s roughly $29...

Kibler SMR frizzen broke in two

No sir. This will be number 3 when I get it finished. My first was a TOTW Bedford County build in .36. My second is a Kibler colonial in .50. Also a pistol in the works. I’m still really new at this, I just finished the first one a few months ago. And yes they sure are fun. Addicting actually...

Kibler SMR frizzen broke in two

I received the new frizzen today. Minor filing involved to fit. I installed it and have snapped it twice outside the the stock. Seems to work well. Lots of sparks. I have already started finishing the stock so I’m not ready to put everything together yet. Should I snap a few more times? It’s...

Kibler SMR frizzen broke in two

@LRB I did not think your post was misleading. I agree about the grain structure, although this is cast material. I have no experience with cast steel grain. I found your post most informative. Thanks for your input. Jon.

Kibler SMR frizzen broke in two

This my second. The first was a .50 cal Colonial. Very easy to build. My first build was a Track of the Wolf kit. I have posts about it here some months ago. The Kibler is certainly a much easier build. Jon

Kibler SMR frizzen broke in two

Mr. Kibler is sending me a new one. With virtually no questions asked. I told him what exactly happened and he’s sending me a new frizzen. If you look at my original post, I think I laid it out pretty good. “Is this something I caused?” The man himself said I didn’t. Jim Kibler is a for sure...

Kibler SMR frizzen broke in two

@LRB No sir, those aren’t pits. Those were small flint fragments. I think the lighting made it look as though they were pits. But you have reminded me to remove the machine marks. Also to update: I talked to Jim today and told him what had happened. He didn’t hesitate a bit. Said he’s...

I know Jim will make this right. I was concerned it was something I had done. Dave I’m very glad you chimed in. I’ve always taken your posts as gospel l. It makes me feel better that it might not be my fault. Jon

Kibler SMR frizzen broke in two

Hello all I received my Kibler SMR kit Thursday and I immediately went to work on it. I got the barrel and tang fit then went to work on the lock. I disassembled the lock and got the lock plate right. I reassembled the lock and it fit quite nicely. Just a bit of wood to remove for the...
