Can anyone identify the animal used for this fur hat and the style it’s stitched?

I am gonna go with wolverine. Badger would be the first choice, but there is just not enough of the striking white markings. So wolverine, and I am thinking a pretty young one. A very traditional, but sloppy job of assembly by the way.

Poll: Will the closing of Goex dissuade you from buying a Flintlock?

Hodgdon has had some problems. A lab explosion killed the inventor of Pyrodex, Dan Pawlak in the '70's. With the coming and going of other semi-smokeless substitute powders, I assume the production of those has been problematic as well. There were a couple of incidences with their black...

Poll: Will the closing of Goex dissuade you from buying a Flintlock?

This attempted sale of the Blackpowder Branch at Hodgdon's is great news! Hopefully a buyer will come forward, move the operation to a less regulated area, and get production ramped up and going again. I became interested in muzzle loaders sometime in the very late '60's and was not out of my...

    DUDE, SMOKED HIM!!!???

You don't have to go hunting to see the difference between the way we talked and did things back in the day, and the way things are done today. The "yo DUDE" and the "hey BRO", seems to manifest itself at work or at play just about everywhere I go with the younger set. The wife #2 or 3 seems...

Poll: Will the closing of Goex dissuade you from buying a Flintlock?

Just like reloading for unmentionable, and loading and shooting your blackpowder guns. It is as safe as you make it, but any horseplay and or drinking etc. are out of bounds totally. Like driving top speed in a sports car, you better lean the safety edge your way.

Poll: Will the closing of Goex dissuade you from buying a Flintlock?

I am not so sure about this as I used to be. There are more traditional Americans just going along with the powers that be presently than there are getting fed up and saying enough is enough, and speaking out. I am not exempting myself. I never would have believed you could remove our...

Poll: Will the closing of Goex dissuade you from buying a Flintlock?

Goex closing is depressing to me. Seems just one more nail in the coffin for the shooting sports. I am at a loss to explain all these recent changes, but bad to worse news is coming in faster than this old guy can adjust.

Poll: Will the closing of Goex dissuade you from buying a Flintlock?

In a way this is a good thing. With nothing to lose and a whole host of long term black powder makers soon to be unemployed, maybe a buyer will get a bp plant going here in the West where we are not so mercilessly regulated--yet.

Poll: Will the closing of Goex dissuade you from buying a Flintlock?

The briefest of research into the plant explosion that brought this closure on reveals that the most likely cause was a batch of powder contaminated with quartz coming into contact with the aluminum corning worm. I have read most of everything that has been written about the old Dupont plant...

Poll: Will the closing of Goex dissuade you from buying a Flintlock?

It is very strange to me how the fads come and go in the shooting world. The first re-emergence of blackpowder shooting was apparently in the thirties, on through the fifties. Not that it was mainstream, just that a lot of folks were doing it. The CW reenacting was strong in the 50's and 60's...

Building a Pecatonica Tennessee Classic Longrifle

Speaking of mistakes. My latest boner was to very very carefully lay out a tapped 8 x 32 hole. I measured and remeasured, drilled the tap hole perfectly on location Then, being a bit hurried and not using my reading glasses to check the tap, I tapped it in perfect position 8 x 36 NF. : ).

Well I envy you the courage to strike out on your own. The word "career" is an interesting one today. The only folks with careers now seem to be the public employees, doctors, dentists, etc. The private sector strives to do as little as possible for the employee these days for a multitude of...

Building a Pecatonica Tennessee Classic Longrifle

Great video! I would say you have pretty well mastered the woodworking end of the gunsmith trade. Those dulcimers cannot be an easy article to get out and get right. You are willing to put in the time to arrive at a good inletting job on the rifle, and that is the real secret. Whenever my...

Building a Pecatonica Tennessee Classic Longrifle

I laid in my forge, blower and a decent sized anvil not so long ago. When the stored building materials are all used up out of our old Model T garage on the property I intend to rebuild it into a small classic style barn and set the treadle lathe, post drill, long stem vise, forge etc. up out...

Building a Pecatonica Tennessee Classic Longrifle

You can all be pleased that I do not pick anything or sing, probably sound like a couple of tomcats fighting in a hardware pantry. I better stick to the guns.

Building a Pecatonica Tennessee Classic Longrifle

There isn't that much difference between cutting wood and steel outside of the cutting speeds involved. Most of the tools for handworking either are similar. True that the metal requires more force and time, but it also holds shape better and there is no splitting. Don't sell yourself short...

Building a Pecatonica Tennessee Classic Longrifle

That is a very nice looking and period correct fix. Seems this iron poor boy guard would not be over difficult to fabricate from mild steel pieces and have TIGed. Maybe that would be more cost effective than fighting the problematic casting in the long run.

The LC Smith thread exists on another more appropriate forum for those who would care to visit. It is in the Shotgun Forum (not shotgun world) under High End and Specialty Guns--LC Smith Build from Scratch. I have been off it awhile the COVID prevented me from getting any Acraglas for a half...

    Pillow ticking ?

With the fabric industry going overseas to the extent that it has in the last two decades it is harder to find a quality weave. This COVID thing has been a real bear, but the opportunity to revitalize American manufacturing in every industry has never been as good as it has been in recent years.

    Colt 1851 vs. Pietta

I have considered doing something like this, but my shop is hopeless at this time. The Mrs. and I are 4 feet deep (literally) in our septic system dig currently. Seems I find time to open the shop occasionally, heave something in, and slam the door before it rolls back out. : ). With 1700...
