    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

How would a ball with 15-20 grns and a bunch of cereal, possibly the most accurate load/charge possible for the sake of argument, be ideal when it lacks most of anything required to work well? It’s precisely why I started at 25 grns of sporting grade powder and found their more accurate...

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

I was given a honey bottle filled with cereal grains like Malt-O-Meal or something long ago by my father. It came with the Ruger his passed friend had. It always baffled me that people would shoot cereal out of their guns to make them work properly and seat the ball close to the mouth to improve...

    Conicals for revolvers

I always thought we had the capacity to learn from others without the need to experience things firsthand in order to learn. Guess I should toss out my books, they’re clearly no good.

    LOTS of Vaseline apparently.

    Conicals for revolvers

Shooting a 0.440” ball through a gun with 0.442” lands and 0.4535” grooves sounds ridiculous, as does slathering a bunch of Vaseline to hold an undersized ball in place and to prevent chainfires. Vaseline?!?! Sure does seem to go against conventional wisdom…

Real rich… Some people just know it all, and it can make for great one way conversations.

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

Both of my pistols seem to have a more accurate powder charge that doesn’t change with projectile. For my NMA it’s 32.5 grns of 3F Olde Eynsford and for my ROA it’s 37.5 grns. Point of impact changes but group sizes stay about the same.

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

I saw his pictures and listened to what he had to say, and that bullet was specifically designed to increase the pressures tremendously over a commonly used one…

    Conicals for revolvers

Interesting. I wonder why such dramatic differences. Again, it goes back to my stating that expansion cannot be relied upon. And so I like the fact that the permanent wound track doesn’t get smaller, it’s either big or bigger.

    Conicals for revolvers

Triple 7 is hotter than standard powders but it’s not quite as good as Olde Eynsford or Swiss Powder, or the French or South African sporting grade powders. I was using mostly Olde Eynsford after it was available but they seemed to group identically for me. Maybe someone better than I would...

    Conicals for revolvers

There was a military video from the 60’s where they showed various arms, including old black powder guns to include an 1860 Army. It was loaded with weak powder as the ball was traveling around 700 fps, but it went through ballistics gel and through the bone and made a perfect hole without...

    Conicals for revolvers

At these velocities you can’t be so sure. I’ve talked with a lot of people over the years when I first started making my own designs and the general consensus is pure lead needs to be traveling over 1100 fps to readily expand without hitting bone. You aren’t getting 1000 fps, especially if it’s...

    Conicals for revolvers

I had been working on finding both my New Model Army and Old Army pistols and then create a universal bullet for them. I ended up moving to a place where I couldn’t shoot black powder and so I only had two range days in 9 years and lost my proficiency with them. But we’ve moved back and I’m...

I have to rethink the spare cylinder idea

There was testing done to simulate a chainfire detonation and with 30 grns of 3F Goex and a ball they found it only had 7 ft/lbs of energy IIRC. They figured it might bruise you.

    Hazard Compressed Powder Cartridges

Yeah, it’s interesting but I just don’t see why I’d go through all of that instead of rolling paper cartridges, although to be fair I have a crap ton of American Spirits papers. I do find it rather interesting though. And had I not all of these papers I might be curious enough to try, even more...
