    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

Nope, just ripped open the fired chamber.

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

I had to open up the loading window/port to accept the huge meplat sticking out. Working from Mike Beliveau’s work in which he shot several projectiles with various powders from two Ruger’s, namely the custom Lee 255 grn bullet, I had assumed I’d be working with less powder capacity, figuring...

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

It’s been a while but I’ve seen some of the conversations concerning the “need” to use cowboy action only in conversion cylinders, and how it’s not so. It doesn’t even pass the sniff test really. Why would my percussion cylinder be capable of handling so much more and not be constrained equally so?

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

When I read of extreme powder charges like this I figure it’s due to powder measures that throw much lighter than they state. The cheapy measure I got in my revolver kit from Cabelas is like this. My rifle measures throw close to what they weigh (30 grns of 3F Olde Eynsford weighs about 32.5...

Who’s trying to blow up their cylinders? Well, the Old Army is essentially a Black Hawk…

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

But not under a very heavy for it’s length bullet designed to create long driving bands. It only took one attempt to shoot one for it destroy his cylinder. The long driving bands create additional pressure, something a Ruger can handle all day long, and created so as to help bring up the...

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

I sent some very heavy but short bullets I designed with very long driving bands for my Ruger as a Ruger-only type projectile (it weighs 285 grns and is barely longer than Lee’s 255 grn bullet). A guy loaded his Walker up with a max charge of 52 grns of Pyrodex P and it blew his chamber wall...

Bought a pieta 1858 Remington. Looking for some load data and answers.

I have a few complaints concerning the Pietta NMA vs Uberti’s. The grossly undersized chambers of 0.446” with a groove diameter of 0.4535” on mine. I had mine reed to 0.449”. Uberti’s come with 0.450” from what I understand. The next is that the loading window/port isn’t big enough for most...

    My 2013 Pietta has a 1:16” twist.

Bought a pieta 1858 Remington. Looking for some load data and answers.

Those velocity numbers have been beaten by sporting grade powders. There’s plenty of published chronographed results. There’s an extremely easy one showing a 5.5” vs a 7.5” ROA comparing 3F Goex to extremely reduced loads of 3F Triple 7 using a ball, the 220 grn Lee RN, and Kaido’s custom 255...

Bought a pieta 1858 Remington. Looking for some load data and answers.

Odd, having read up to this point not once did I see mention of making a cap n ball revolver into a magnum. Could you show me where I missed this?

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

According to the P-Max Swiss powder ballistics calculator an 8” Remington/Colt should be able to achieve over 1000 fps with my 195 grn WFN bullets that’s merely 0.460” long and a 37.5 grn charge of 3F sporting grade powder. Mine has a 5.5” barrel and it shows 938 fps and a tad over another 100...

    Shoulder pistols

Nice! I’m curious what you load your .62 with (I assume it’s rifled since you didn’t say 20ga, but maybe) and what it groups like.

    .36 Colt Navy that powerful??????

As he eluded to it could well have been from poor choice of bullet. There’s plenty of poor choices one could select for hunting.

    .36 Colt Navy that powerful??????

Clearly your friend can’t shoot… I’m in favor of larger calibers kinda like Elmer, so I’m no fan of smaller stuff, but it is capable of deer using a proper hunting bullet.

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

I’ve tested several different projectiles along with a ball, and they’ve all grouped the same for me at 15 yds offhand in a semi weaver stance. Granted I’m no pistolero. This is what has led me down the path to find the most accurate charge and create a bullet for it. Maybe with a good rest I...

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

I’m a bit curious why you’d chose a ball and max charge for full size hogs. I’m working on finding both my NMA and ROAs more accurate hunting sporting grade powder charge and filling in the majority of the excess with lead. It looks to be 30-32.5 grns and 35-37.5 grns with the excess giving me...

    Hey Britsmoothy, 4F powder

I had long ago found someone who had researched Hazard’s paper cartridges in .44 cal while also testing some he had in hand. Dissecting one showed him it contained 4F. Testing it showed to be as powerful as Swiss powder. It was their new powder called Pistol Powder. More recently I was shown...

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

The Lee 220 grn is meant for the Ruger. They make a 200 grn RN meant for the repros that drop a little smaller. Even .456” is a bit too big for the Ruger. My chambers run .453” and when using a bullet with driving bands like we have there’s no need to shave a ring. Just like with modern stuff...

    Keeping an 1858 loaded indefinitely
