    .36 vs. .44 "Stopping Power"

100% agree. Elmer did a lot for the gun community. Up until more recent modern powders bigger was better. Want to hunt something big or in the midst of things that are dangerous? You’d be carrying large calibers. And big wide meplats are the most ideal, especially in these handguns. And more...

Heeled bullets for cap and ball revolvers

I would like to know more on your load and experience with the 45-245C. I had created it with my Ruger in mind, and gave it longer driving bands than I felt comfortable with for a repro. I had TX hogs in mind. I’m working on figuring out the excess chamber spaces after dialing in their more...

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

You can get/create a mold with Accurate Mold or purchase the modified Lee bullets from Kaido. I’m sure there are others.

    Pietta Remington NMA Twist

Ruger used the .45 Colt barrels so the twist should be 1:16”.

    Pietta Remington NMA Twist

I was just looking at the specs on Pietta models and noted they state the twist rate is 1:30”. My 2012 or 13 Sheriff’s model is 1:16”. Did they change it or not update info when they retooled?

    Hollow points

There was a fellow on a now defunct forum who has done just this having sent his custom Accurate mold to Hollow Point Molds getting two HP pins added. He used epoxy on the ram face to create a ram that wouldn’t distort the cavity upon loading. He used it hunting from his Walker and Remington...

what is the correct projectile size for a .36 cal colt 1851?

Well, I’d be curious to know your results. I’ve only really read about 4F use in Rugers and it doesn’t seem like it’s as accurate.

How to cut grease notches in a ‘58 Remington cylinder pin?

I just squirt a little Ballistol down in there periodically and all runs just fine. If I could shoot more than a dozen cylinders without fuss I’d be all ears.

what is the correct projectile size for a .36 cal colt 1851?

What was quite interesting is that the Hazard’s paper cartridges tested were found to contain 4F powder and was new and called their Pistol Powder with the .44 cal version tested, and it was claimed to be as energetic as Swiss powder.

    .36 Colt Navy that powerful??????

Sounds like the Lee RN, I’m not sure if any others that would have been common, but it’s not like I’ve researched that. Had the projectile makers creating RN or wide meplat conicals back then I’m sure we’d be hearing a much different story about their use compared to a ball able to take the...

    .36 Colt Navy that powerful??????

Depends on both the powder used as well as the bullet. I’ve seen .36 numbers that place it squarely in the .38 Spl +P range, which makes more sense when we hear about how well it stopped a man.

    .36 Colt Navy that powerful??????

I would love to see this test done again with sporting grade powders and better bullets with a large meplat.

    .36 Colt Navy that powerful??????

I have Lyman’s 2nd Edition and the problem is that they didn’t also test Swiss. Olde Eynsford made by Goex to compete with Swiss is a much newer powder that may not be available any longer after their disaster, and it seems Triple 7 may not have been available at testing or maybe too new and...

Pietta 1858 New Army Revolver .44 Cal 8" barrel

I measured my Pietta NMA barrel and the grooves measure 0.4535”, which is a lot of space needed to obturate to fill those grooves and make a complete seal coming from chambers measuring ~0.446”. The more lead you have to work with along that narrow driving band the better. It was most evident in...

    Testing .44 Caliber Stepped Chambers

I really don’t like the strange face my Pietta Remington NMA has, but I want a ram face that won’t distort my very large meplat when loading. A fellow on a now defunct forum had been dealing with this and made a face with epoxy, as well as one for the same bullet but with a hollow point design...

    .36 vs. .44 "Stopping Power"

Except that concealed carry was fairly common in the latter portion of that time frame. Lincoln was assassinated by a concealed carry piece.

    Testing .44 Caliber Stepped Chambers

I’d like to know more about what you’ve done. I know of only one other who’s modified the ram, though his approach was epoxy.

    Oval Bolt Stops

The Walker and 1st Dragoon, along with a few others, have oval bolt stops with no lead. Does anyone with these find them not lock up properly from time to time? I couldn’t imagine being in a situation and have a situation where my pistol doesn’t fire!
