    BALLISTOL a fair shake

From what I understand it makes cleaning quite the tedious chore, who’d want to deal with that? I like how it cleans up fairly easily.

Conical bullets in a cap and ball revolver

I don’t believe the cutout (loading window) was designed for use with conicals. My Pietta NMA needed a lot of work there for me to be able to load my bullets.

    BALLISTOL a fair shake

I’m not so sure of that. That’s one test I wouldn’t try. But there are several things I’ve found out are parroted concerning black powder that just isn’t true. Triple 7 and this “need” to reduce the charge as well as to compress ever so lightly, 4F powder being solely a pan powder, these pistols...

    BALLISTOL a fair shake

Paraffin wax is also used in Gatofeo’s #1 lube, an old recipe designed for outside lubricated black powder bullets. It may be a petroleum product but it doesn’t seem to do the things people warn of with petroleum products. 🤷 I use both Ballistol and Gatofeo’s.

Is there a lube for shooting conicals?

I’ve used Gatofeo’s lube on my pistol bullets and REALs, though I can’t get the rifle to behave yet. Maybe the lube isn’t all that great for that application. It’s an old formula for outside lubed pistol bullets, but I recall Gatofeo claiming it good for patches too, not sure about rifle bullets.

Oh, Come On With the Inflated Caps!!

It’s been about a decade since I bought caps, Rem #10, but the packaging states it has 40% more flame volume than their previous design, and gives a little picture to show you the difference. I’ve used them shooting Triple 7 and Pyrodex and it works just fine. I prefer Olde Eynsford myself and...

Kaido Ojamaa's 255 conical and the ROA

Yes, Triple 7 is cleaner and black powder is more corrosive, but T7 will still chew on your steel if left alone too long. The power is quite similar with Swiss being just a little more potent. The thing is Swiss is much more consistent giving a much smaller deviation between shots. I’m not...

Oh, Come On With the Inflated Caps!!

Yeah, seems everyone who’s tried them really likes them. Guess it’s worth a try but at the additional expense over Remingtons? It wouldn’t likely be something I bought often. However I just bought a cap making tool and got it today. Got tired of reading threads talking about the lack of...

Kaido's 240gr Conical is a Keeper for sure

Curious if the originals had tapered chambers as well. If not how has it reduced capacity with a ball? We’ve all heard the 60 grns of powder as a max with a ball. I need to run those super short bullets with a max charge out of my Ruger just to see, never tried it. Being only .400” long it’ll...

Kaido Ojamaa's 255 conical and the ROA

I only weighed my charges because I had sent you several projectiles to test along with identical powder charges as it’s the only way we could duplicate things exactly. I just worked in 5 grn increments finding what shot more accurately in both and will be designing a universal bullet to fill in...

Kaido's 240gr Conical is a Keeper for sure

All of the velocities/energy figures were using a sporting grade powder, and the bullet weights vary of course. The friction fit of each will make the pressures vary as well. And because there’s so much variance I’ve given a range. Samples are taken from Mr Beliveau’s testing, Lyman’s Black...

Kaido's 240gr Conical is a Keeper for sure

This is based on posted information using similar propellants and projectiles. There’s plenty of chronographed results. So using those published in books and online point to this. One day I’ll likely have my own and publish my results as well.

Kaido's 240gr Conical is a Keeper for sure

Sporting grade was first used that I’m aware of back during the Civil War when Hazard’s (and I’m sure others, but weren’t the focus as this was on their paper cartridges used by the military) used what seems better charcoal and what you see is powders akin to todays Swiss, Olde Eynsford, and...

Kaido Ojamaa's 255 conical and the ROA

The free powder measure with the black powder pistol kit back in something like 2016 was marked much higher than what it weighed. I don’t use it. I much prefer the types with a small funnel, and these tend to be rifle measures, which to me is great as I then only need one. Apparently a blessing...

Kaido Ojamaa's 255 conical and the ROA

I measure by volume and then weighed the black powder charges to see what they in comparison to the markings. The T7 uses the same volumetric setting.

Kaido Ojamaa's 255 conical and the ROA

I agree there’s no way to get that much powder under that bullet, closer to 30 grns which is what Mr Belliveau used in his testing with Goex and that bullet. I don’t know, I haven’t experienced erratic pressures or any other issue from compressing Triple7, my groups are about identical to my...

Kaido's 240gr Conical is a Keeper for sure

From what little data that’s been posted by people using sporting grade power and bullets one could expect to see 875-950 fps with a 230 grn bullet. And that’s with the 5.5” shorter version like my NMA. And someone else stated theirs was getting even higher results. I’m a bit skeptical. Even at...

Kaido Ojamaa's 255 conical and the ROA

I forgot to mention having an oversized bullet is unnecessary, you need that with a ball to create a bearing surface for a friction fit.

Kaido's 240gr Conical is a Keeper for sure

Interesting. This goes against records shown for the Hazard’s .44 cal paper cartridge, but also what someone who tested some actual cartridges. The conicals weighed 211 grns and the powder charge was 36 grns of 4F powder equivalent to Swiss powder.

Kaido's 240gr Conical is a Keeper for sure

There’s been a couple of tests with varying ball sizes and the velocity actually goes up slightly with each increase of ball size. The increased friction from the increased bearing surface of the larger ball apparently creates more pressure along with the slight increase in mass, a few grains...
