Am I the only one in the Great Lakes Region?

I’m 40 miles east of Green Bay, right on Lake Michigan. I shoot only traditional black powder rifles, no modern, in-line guns. I don’t know any other traditional black powders hunters in this area.

    Thoughts on SPAM "meat"

No, no, I do not WANT to eat Spam. In fact, I question how anyone can eat it. I’ve noticed thru this thread that most who do eat it boil it or wash it down with a keg of ale or do something to kill the taste. I think it’s akin to a week old road-killed skunk- it will provide protein, but it...

    Thoughts on SPAM "meat"

This to all Spam lovers. As a kid, we are Spam often. Recently after some 40 years off Spam, I got hungering for it. So I fried some up and was very surprised to find it soooo salty that it was almost impossible to eat. So I’m wondering if Hornel changed the original Spam recipe or was it always...

45 OR 50 CAL. FOR WHITETAIL DEER.

A little history here. Most of us know Davy Crockett is remembered as a very successful deer hunter, but also a proficient bear hunter, taking many black bear in Kentucky and Tennessee. His first rifle was a .48 caliber flintlock. In 1822, he was presented a rifle by his constituents for his...

Am I the only one in the Great Lakes Region?

Ernest, Nice to hear from you. Never too old to learn something new. I’m not near as old as you, only 67, but I really enjoy shooting & hunting with traditional muzzle loaders. Actually, I no longer hunt with modern rifles. I built a .45 cal Kentucky Long Rifle back around 1975, and 2 years ago...

Impact of cold temperature on ballistics

I vote for buck/doe fever. As mentioned, it does cause us to do strange things. In some hunters, a close deer ramps up the problem. A deer at 100 yards may not get us revved up much, but one at hand shaking distance can send us over the edge-as far as doing unexplainable things. I personally...

Am I the only one in the Great Lakes Region?

I have to wonder, if you can see the U.P. From your property, why you haven’t moved across the Straits yet to God’s country. You’re like a kid outside a candy store. What’s the saying, “Close, but no cigar.” Oh, well, just the same, it’s a beautiful place to live! Great to hear from you...

    Just something I do.

I found this site just a few days ago, even though I’ve been building and shooting traditional muzzle loaders for over 40 years. I have to profess ignorance of a lot of the rituals mentioned here. I just clean my Rifle/s after every shoot. I use hot water and a good black powder bore cleaner. I...

Christmas gathering; what's left of the past

I hope the photo was taken before the shooting. If it was taken after, you boys need to visit the eye doctor. It is a great photo, just the same. Looks like Ben Franklin and his pals out shooting.

What wood for split the ball on an ax?

I’m sure it can be done. When my buddies & I were in our teens, we used to challenge each other with our .22 rifles by shooting through the neck of a beer or pop bottle and shoot the bottom out. Of course, the bottle was laying on its side. So, we had to shoot through the open, small mouth of...

What wood for split the ball on an ax?

Ah, yes, that makes perfect sense. I have a double bladed axe that I haven’t used in many years. Now I have something I can do with it. Thanks, guys.

What wood for split the ball on an ax?

Pardon my ignorance, but just what are you all talking about? Seems like some sort of marksmanship test?

    Kids moving out..... eventually

Gentlemen, Didn’t mean to cause a ruckus over bear spray vs guns, etc. I raised 2 daughters and a son. Youngest is now 37. I taught them all about guns, shooting, hunting and all had plenty of shooting experience. I also taught them about self defense. At this point, the decision is up to them...

    Kids moving out..... eventually

Maybe another thought to consider: would these young people be able to cope mentally with potentially killing an intruder? Personally, I keep bear spray at hand for an intruder. Not necessarily the best choice, but it’s one that I can live with.

Traditions .32 cal Crockett kit build

Guys, Regarding the apprehension about that brass spacer, just letting you know that I built that same CVA Kentucky Long Rifle in .45 cal. about 1975. I’ve hunted deer and black bear with it all these 43 years. It’s never failed or come apart. The Rifle still shoots true. I can hit a playing...

    Intro from Wisconsin

Hey Railshot, Thanks for saying howdy. I’ve only lived in Wisconsin 28 years. Before that was 10 years in the Black Hills of South Dakota, started out in Michigan’s UP. Western history is what I really enjoy. I’ve visited some many western historical sites and ream reams of history books and...

Am I the only one in the Great Lakes Region?

I live near Green Bay, WI., but from the U.P. Of Michigan, also called a Yooper. It is mostly a wilderness paradise up there. I usually do a winter camping trip in the Keweenaw Peninsula using simple lean-tos. I go specifically to hear the wolves howl at night. Was camping/deer hunting with my...
