Point a tenderfoot in the right direction on selecting a kit

Dixie Gun Works has Pedersoli Kits . . . not knocking traditions, but many believe Pedersoli is a better rifle.

CLOSED Traditions Crockett 32 Cal Rifle

I had one of these and the ramrod was a fiberglass or some similar kind of strong plastic - stiff not flexible . . .it worked very well. These are nice, well-proportioned rifles with a good reputation.

    Sight Options/Bad eyes

My eyes are not great and I have this sight you're considering on my TVM lancaster . . . It does fine . . .. and I don't see buckhorns well either . . . I have a fairly wide gap in the sight . . . where you place the rear sight matters a lot too.

    Draw Filing

I was going to say the same thing . . . I have three rice barrels and have not seen the need to draw file any of them in my builds . . . I have sanded them a little mostly due to dings and scratches when building.

Left Handed Chambers PA Fowler Kit

I was working on my blank build last night and we were inletting the trigger plate. I had drilled a hole up to the lock trigger sear a few weeks before so we could trip the trigger and test that the lock parts worked without hitting wood. Well, I drilled the hole a little off center. My coach...

Left Handed Chambers PA Fowler Kit

Well, that floral one may work then. It was 3 or 4 years ago, and I thought it was inlet a little, but maybe not. For some reason, we contacted Barbie and she sent me a rectangular one. I am currently working on my third build, a Southern Rifle from a blank. (I have the same coach helping...

Left Handed Chambers PA Fowler Kit

Thank you . . . Ha! I did the very same thing, but I was cheap about it. I went to the library and got the Flintlock Fowlers book via an intra library loan and photocopied many pages of it. My fowler is finished with Aqua-Fortis . . . I love the color, but it was the first rifle I've used...

    Building a Maryland Rifle

These videos are wonderful . . . thank you !!!! I am building a southern rifle from a blank . . I've got the barrel and the lock inlet . . . I'll be watching all of these. You have helpful comments. . . you're a good craftsman.

Left Handed Chambers PA Fowler Kit

I have a Chambers PA Fowler in Left Hand . . . they accidentally sent me a floral-looking trigger plate. Barbie fixed it and sent the LH trigger plate which is just rectangular with the slot. Looking at it, in my built rifle, it appears that it may be slotted slightly to the lock side, but it...

SOLD NICE Lyman .50 Great Plains Rifle

I have one of these in LH - they are a great deer rifle and this is a good price. Also, they are very forgiving . . . mine shoots well with a variety of loads. It was not hard as a newbie to get this in the zone at the range . . . I have taken two deer with my GPR flint 50. This is a good rifle.

    Early Pennsylvania Smoothbores

If I understand your question . . . . The Jim Chambers Pennnsylvania Fowler is one you might want to look at . . I think it is modeled around 1760-1770, but his web page says. Hatchet Jack on this sight has a amazing one, but here is a pic of mine . . I need to take better pics of it. . . and...

Chambers PA fowler I built three years ago. (Deer hide came from my Lyman GPR)

Best way to go about it.

I've built two kits, a chambers and a TVM, and I am building from a blank now . . all three with a coach. . . you will learn a lot from a blank, but I prefer a pre carve kit at my level of experience. A blank is a lot more work. . . and requires a lot more setup and precision . . there are...

Advice please - Thinking of taking the dive into Flint

I bought a used Lyman GPR LH flint years ago built by invest arms … two deer later it has never disappointed me and I have two custom Siler locked rifles to compare it to. . . W black English flints it does well.

    Cracked Mainspring

I had an L&R Manton lock I bought two years ago as NOS in which the mainspring broke … L&R was great - replaced it for free w an upgraded spring.

My next build Jim Chambers PA Fowler

Nice work . . . very nice in every area . . . I put a muzzle cap on my PA fowler . . . I like caps and though it didn't come with the kit, the one I saw at Friendship at the NMLRA Jim Chambers booth had a muzzle cap. . .but your ramrod and muzzle look great . . .very fowler-ish.

    Cleaning a non removable barrel

I’ve not removed a barrel in 11 years of muzzleloading to clean a rifle - too risky to mar a stock … too much work too, when a cleaning solution and about a dozen patches do the same thing

Dutch Schoultzs' Dry Patch Method in Winter

I use Dutch’s patch method of Ballistol & water patch but mostly at the range in the summer … I think the main point of his method is a pre made consistent amount of lube on every patch. .. winter might require a different lube

    Sprue cut: Facing which way?

I agree w another post here - on my 32 the short starter always leaves a mark on the ball … I do spru up but I think reading the black Powder book by Sam Faldo who is a top rated BP authority that It did not matter up or down. Some guys try to remove the sprue w a file but it’s not possible...

    Guidance

I totally agree - I bought a used Lyman Great Plains flint and it was worth it - I think you might be able to find one for $450 and it’s a nicer rifle than the traditions pellet.
