    Problems with "Bore Butter"

I am not sure bore butter is the same as wonderlube … bore butter seems more liquid and seems to melt (it’s messy) whereas wonderlube patches don’t so much … (I used them in my smoothbore). My question is while it affects fowling does one lube give better accuracy than another ? There seems to...

    Problems with "Bore Butter"

Bore butter works well for cap and ball pistols … As for patch lube on patches I tend to wonder how much patch lube matters in terms of one kind over another … it can matter for hunting in various weather … but I think what matters more for accuracy is consistent amounts on the patch every time...

    Crockett rifle cleanout screw

This explains why the Crockett I had would grab patches and jags in the breech - it was a pain to clean if the jag was too tight I’d lose patches every time. It drove me crazy -

    Jim Chambers vs. TVM Kit

I would add one more comment here. Jim Chambers makes rifles that are exact or near-exact copies of original rifles from the 18th Century. They are "historically correct" and traceable to a real-life builder in the mid 1700's. For many people on this forum, and for me too, that means...

    Jim Chambers vs. TVM Kit

I have built both a TVM and a Chambers . . . each has different strengths. On my Chambers PA fowler the ramrod thimbles were almost fully inlet and the barrel and lock and tang were maybe 85% inlet, the stock was shaped more . . on TVM the barrel and lock and tang were more inlet perhaps 95%...

    Squirrel season 2021

I've shot a squirrel with a traditions crockett caplock and with a smoothbore, (shot), but this year was my first success with a flintlock .32 that I built myself from a TVM late Lancaster kit.

    Stock Finishing Question

Thank you, that means a lot. I simply used Febing's Dark Brown leather dye. . .the after it dried I used BC true oil rubbed back lightly with steel wool to seal it. Febing's is messy, but it works really well. When I originally put that together as a teen with my dad I am 99% sure we...

    Ballistol as lube for Smoothbore?

I use Ballistol as a patch lube for my rifles … as a dry patch lube water & Ballistol mix - soak patches then let them dry (Dutch Schultz method) and it works fine … I’m sure it would work w a smoothbore … however in my smoothbore I simply use pre-lube Ox Yoke patches because a friend gave me...

    Stock Finishing Question

I agree with painting stripes, though I've not been very good at that . . . but you can also make a beech stock look decent with just Febings leather dye. This is a beech, or hickory-stocked CVA Derringer that I built as a teen in the 80's and refinished and stained with leather dye last year...

    Waiting and waiting anyone else?

This comment may not be helpful and I may be missing something … but at the Pecatonica booth at Friendship this summer they had 50-75 stocks … I saw several Beck’s of various grades … it surprises me that they would have a lot of back orders. I’d definitely call them and ask what’s going on w...

Need some advice on Traditions Kentucky flintlock build

Traditions KY is nice, but I don't like the spacer at all, so I'd make a wooden one or at the very least blacken the brass one to hide it some. As others have said though for alignment some kind of spacer is needed.

    Finished pictures of Kibler kit...

I don't usually like carving on a lot of guns, but I very much like what you did on the check piece side. Beautiful rifle !! I like all the engraving, particularly on the ramrod rear entry.

    Oil Flints :

I have a friend who has been a muzzleloading builder and shooter for decades . . he keeps some of his flints in a jar filled with water. I haven't asked why.

My next build Jim Chambers PA Fowler

As you know from my previous posts I built this same rifle but in left hand. I chose screws for the trigger guard long tail as I was afraid of drilling on the rounded wrist. . . also you may find it of interest that the left hand PA Fowler has a straight trigger plate rather than the ornate...

    First Flintlock Rifle Squirrel

It was fun. Its not like picking up a shotgun or my Ruger 10/22 w a scope and heading out . . . Practice at the range is required in the off season (for me at least.)

    First Flintlock Rifle Squirrel

Well, since every animal taken with a ML is a trophy in my view. . . this is my first flintlock squirrel. (I shot a grey with a Traditions Crockett a few years ago, and one with a smoothbore and shot last year) . . . This one is special since I built this rifle a few years ago. It is a TVM...

    best non-fouling powder for 32

I use a dried patch of water & ballistol sometimes, but often a spit patch at the range in my Rice barreled 32 flint, with 30 grains of Goex 3f and a 310 or 311 ball with a 15 patch. I have swabbed after every shot and after every 3rd shot . . .not sure yet, which is best. I know I have...
