Butt plates are tough for me!

Burning masking tape works better than a candle. Just take it slow and dont cut corners. I think it is not hard but it is time consuming. Forget about how long it takes and revel in the accuracy of your work. I will mention that fitting a checkered steel buttplate to an unmentionable (one with...

    H. J. Sterling SxS "London twist" barrel shotgun.

Looking good A cheesehead screw (read flat based screw) will take the wedge effect out but there is basically no wood in the forend so anything will require care. Your glue will have soaked into the grain a little making it much stronger than previously which is good.

    H. J. Sterling SxS "London twist" barrel shotgun.

Fr the crack. First you need to clean out the split of grease and debris. If you can get a small wire brush in it works well. Floss can also be helpful. Failing that a bit of solvent and compressed air but careful not to blow rubbish in or let the solvent on the outside finish. Once it is clean...

    H. J. Sterling SxS "London twist" barrel shotgun.

The question you ask cannot really be answered. Yes it is possible to get the barrels magna fluxed which should show any faws that have developed in the steel. but just looking at it won't tell. I bought a similar gun a little while back. Tied it to a tyre. double loaded it and pulled the...

Adding a rear sight to smoothbore

Basically looks new. Still not a 100 yard gun. Are you prepared to limit yourself to 60 yards? The rust looks basically superficial.

Adding a rear sight to smoothbore

To be honest I have not done the hard yards. From what I know it should take out the need to spend a lot of time getting used to the firearm. By this I mean it is all about repeatability and consistency. With a smoothbore you need to use it enough to be able to mount the firearm consistently to...

Adding a rear sight to smoothbore

I just soldered a modified one on. Make it a wide V like an express big game sight and no worries. An alternative is to fit a rear peep that could be removed or folded down. Depending on how much meat is in the barrel then you could cut a dovetail

    Looking for first flintlock

Get the 54 flinter. Sell your 54 percussion and get a Parker Hale Musketoon in 577. Small gun. BIG hole😁

    Looking for first flintlock

Go 54 then. you have the stuff. You know how they shoot. Much less learning involved. Might be able to get Alan Swann to do up a 28g smooth barrel for it if you wanted. I would not go smaller than 54 for "Elk" sized game with RB.
