    Kibler progress....

Yes this is my first kit build and introduction to muzzle loaders. I love firearms and target shooting but never thought about having a flintlock let alone build one. I just jumped in and prayed for a good outcome. No woodwork experience and is my biggest challenge. Engraving I have done for...

    Kibler progress....

Still chugging away at it. I inlayed a brass band at the muzzle tip, finished the brass & steel engraving, french grayed the barrel and trying to finish the woodwork. Saved the hard part for last, Ha. If I can get thru the finishing steps on woodworking, scrapping, sanding and staining...

First Time Builders, just an encouragement.

Well done Mule and a handsome looking rifle you built. Your can-do positive attitude going into this project is a tribute to the fine outcome and a good lesson for those looking to do the same. I am so amazed at how you can take a plank of wood and sculpture a rifle stock out of it. Heck! I...

?? on sight & cheek height

I have no experience on this. When I sight down my new colonial rifle I have to bury my cheek into in stock really hard to get my sight picture. Do I remove 1/4" from the top of the cheek wood or do I have to get a taller rear sight? Not sure which is correct. The rifle is still in the...

    And Another Kibler Colonial

Wow that is a good looking center piece. I like the sculpting and the deep relief carving really makes it pop out. Looks like I need to go deeper now, Ha!......Labrat

    Progress. Soon back to carving

Very cool looking inlay and nicely done. I love the contrast and you can't go wrong with flower pedals and leaf designs. Mother nature makes them in all sorts of folds shapes and design. Very attractive.........Labrat

    Progress. Soon back to carving

Norman were you talking about metal engraving on soft brass sheets and then doing a wax transfer to the work piece? That is a good way to transfer images and the engraving on the sheet can be kept for further use on other projects. Hope I answered your question...........Labrat

    Progress. Soon back to carving

I draw freehand on the piece. No stencils, computer images or tracing paper just my hands & eyeballs. If I can't draw it freehand I won't use it. This is how I was taught for many years and the more I practiced the better I got. However I am loosing my touch. Can't seem to make a simple...

    Cheek plate advice?

Awe yes it can be inlayed first then taken out and engraved. I'm just saying that it is much easier to engrave on a flat surface then form the piece & inlay. Slight forming won't disfigure the image. That would be my preference.

    Progress. Soon back to carving

Very hard to give an estimate as I start & stop according to my aches & pains, Ha. I figure I'm 33% complete right now. As of today I guess: 16 hrs on kit assembly & roughing out all parts. 10 hrs on wood carving & 1 inlay. 6 hours on metal engraving. This is actual hands on time. Please...

    Cheek plate advice?

Amazing scroll work Jerry. This caught my eye seeing it on Utube & wondered who did that. Very busy and filling design. I love it. Engraving on the moon piece can be done before or after it is inlayed. Engravers choice. I prefer to engrave it on a block of wood in an engravers vise, flat...

    Progress. Soon back to carving

I learned to engrave metal many years ago as a hobby and I'm very comfortable and confident doing it. This is my first wood carving with zero experience so I am a little nervous with every cut. I'm probably holding the gouges a little to hard as I'm experiencing alot of hand pain and need to...

Slow going but making progress. A break from wood carving was much needed.

Gorgeous rifles need at least one beautiful center piece that stands out. Of course the perfectly detailed engraving would be my choice. Top notch engraver and this would definitley turn heads for a second look...........Labrat
