    Damaged firearms

It's that place that's got a lot of neat stuff. It's just that 98% of it ain't the right thing I need or anything I would want.

    It's a 45!

Decided this thing was just a bit too shiny for me. Dismantled it, took to it with some lacquer thinner and a bit of fine sandpaper. I did find the one and only mark on this gun; under the upper part of the buttplate (Wonder why they cut that big chunk out of there?). The stain was in the...

    Different calibers different bags

Made a bag for every gun. But they are used more like "Range" bags. I made another, smaller bag that I use for hunting. Given what I hunt, I am not going to take that many shots, in most cases hopefully only one! Deer and Turkeys I generally can only shoot one per season, pheasants are 3 a day...

    It's a 45!

Got the rust out. Can confirm, round bottom rifling. Besides that surface rust the bore is pristine. I dismantled the gun to see what else might need cleaned/rust removed and found nothing. I mean nothing. No rust, no dirt, no fouling, no discoloration; no indication this gun has ever been...

    It's a 45!

Remember this - SOLD - Flintlock for Sale ? Well, I got it this morning. It's a .45 caliber, 1/48 twist. Barrel is .80 across down most of it's length, seems to taper just a bit just before the crown bevel. The bore has quite a bit of surface rust so I am soaking that now and will report back...

    Vent pick- just how small?

I use worn out 1/16th drill bits mounted in short chunks of dowel

    SOLD Flintlock for Sale

On a whim, I bought it. I also downloaded the pictures of the muzzle, reduced them down and took some measurements, did some math. It's looking like a .40 cal. Once I get it I'll do some more "precise" measurements and let everyone know.

    SOLD Flintlock for Sale

.36 caliber maybe? Can't be .50, that would leave only 1/8 wall thickness. Looks thicker than that. Whoever buys it needs to report back to all us armchair quarterbacks! LOL

I Told a Big, Fat Lie a Couple of Weeks Ago

I don't know as I'd count that as a "Big, fat lie". You harvested that deer for someone else, someone in need; and not for your own satisfaction.

    Lead balls have casting imperfections

Some will tell you to point that down, centered in the barrel. Some will say to just load it and shoot it; at handgun ranges it won't make a difference. The most common practice however, is to point the "Sprew" up, centered. Much easier to center that dang thing when you can see it! LOL

Best barrel twist for .54 Caliber

The optimal twist rate is determined mostly by the length of the projectile your using. In any given caliber the longer your bullet is the faster you got to "twist" it to stabilize it in flight. That's the simple answer. If you want a more complicated explanation all the ratios and formula...

    Tried out the new gun

To answer some of the questions - Yep, I've got the olive oil/wax lube made up and used soaked patches on the round ball shots. The cleaning patches I sent down with the worm had been in my mouth, tucked between my cheek and gum like a hunk of "chaw" so they were wet when they went down. The...

    Minie Ball Tests In Smoothbores

Might consider a foster slug. Shot many of them out of a smoothbore with that "other" kind of ignition
