    Slugging an oddball barrel.

You and Phil Coffins: I do plan on removing the breech to do this. The slug will be cast about 4-5 inches above the breech end of the bbl. The breech plug is no big problem to remove and is sealed with anti size compound, so all is well "down there". Any objections to driving the slug out by...

    Slugging an oddball barrel.

Hello, some may remember my hex bore long-rifle, it's a real oddball. No way to ID it, but I like it. It's not a Whitworth and is a low value rifle. It shoots patched 58 caliber rb's tolerably well. Now I want to make an accurate slug to show to a machinist about making a hex boolitt mold for...

    Dixie disappointment

Also, check the screws that hold the lock parts, for tightness (snugness). Loose lock-part screws made my lock really misbehave in a mysterious way until I finally tried tightening them. The hammer wouldn't fall, then it would only fall to half ****, and then it only fell if I pulled the trigger...

“De-Farbing” a Traditions Percussion Hawken Kit

Oh duh now, I missed the YouTube video posted just above.

“De-Farbing” a Traditions Percussion Hawken Kit

There are videos on YouTube on how to draw file, or flat file, the flats on octagon barrels. It is imminently doable if you can figure out a way to watch it actually being done. Sorry but with my Android phone I can't place any links in this text.

    Shortening a barrel..

I doubt this barrel was ever shot after it was milled. I was just wondering if there's a general rule about loss of velocity or gain of velocity per inch of barrel. I read somewhere that it's a loss of 2 ft per second per inch of shortened barrel, but I doubt that is accurate. It's hard for me...

    Shortening a barrel..

Some of you may remember that I have the .6115 bore hexagonal-rifled 36-in barrel percussion rifle. My story was that the barrel wasn't fully rifled all the way to the end of the bore. So from the muzzle and back about 3 and 1/2 in it was about 58 caliber smooth round. A machinist who also does...

    Barricade?

I was wrong about passing the dew point twice a day. Dew falls as the temperature is falling. That would only happen once a day inside your safe, unless your heating rod is already thermostatically controlled.

    Barricade?

You know, the temperature might be changing enough inside that safe to pass the dew point twice a day, unless the climate inside the safe is controlled by a thermostat inside it. Spyder Robotics sells the perfect thermostatically controlled systems for small spaces like that, that are powered...

    Barricade?

Pool This question wasn't about running a patch down the barrel before shooting, it was about whether the barricade film has to be removed prior to shooting. I take it it does not. BTW I never have wet, oily, gunpowder.

    Barricade?

With a tight fitting dry patch? Or will some kind of solvent? Sorry my ignorance is showing again.

    Traditions Deerhunter Percussion .50 Sights

How much powder does that short barrel need to get sufficient energy to kill a deer at 100 yards? Very curious.

    Barricade?

Should Barricade be cleaned out of the barrel before shooting black powder or black powder substitutes through it?

    Can anyone interpret this?

I can only imagine. I won't even find out the prices.

    Can anyone interpret this?

Sorry about the double post. A few months ago I reported that I made a slug and it showed the bore to be octagonal. It's actually hexagonal like the whitworth rifle of the civil war era. I wonder if the hexagonal bore needs a hexagonal round to function properly.

    Traditions rifled musket.

I should have researched this rifle before I made the post. So I did some researching and it seems at the time they found that the 58 caliber rifled musket was more accurate than the 69. I can only assume that was because the 58 would have a flatter trajectory. I guess few people on this forum...
