  1. Gooddaytoya!

    Lock malfunctioning.

*Well good news!* The problem with the lock is solved. I took the trigger assembly out and reinserted it several times as I was learning how the triggers operated the lock, and then accidentally discovered to my great surprise that I could **** the set trigger and lo and behold the main trigger...

    Lock malfunctioning.

LOL I used a 4-in grinder. But I'm pretty good with that my tools and I knew what I wanted as a final shape. I took the hammer off and used a vice to hold it. It looks like it was factory made for its new purpose.

    lard as patch lube

Commercially available lard has preservatives in it. It's sold on the shelf unrefrigerated, with no expiration date. I buy it a pint at a time, keep several ounces in the refrigerator and store the rest in the freezer, probably because I'm one of those guys who has a hang up about being careful...

Pic of the full length of this old rifle.

No markings on or under the lock plate. Thank you very much for your interest!

Trying to post picture of shield figure on stock a few inches behind the lock.

Pic of the full length of this old rifle.

Thank you for the reassurance that it's probably not some old old antique. It has a steel butt plate which I hope appears in the pic I posted. I'm reluctant to scratch or file a bit of the finish on the trigger guard to find out what's under it, but it is mounted with two fasteners to a narrow...

Pic of the full length of this old rifle.

Hanging on wall. Any guess about the general style of this rifle? Any even remotely possible guess about its maker. I hope like crazy it's not some 150-year-old barn find.

This is a rifle I've been posting about. I took the picture with the flash, so I hope you guys can see it. I'm working to take a better picture right now. I really hope this pic comes through on this post.

    Lock malfunctioning.

Yes, I I put that nipple conversion on there to get a hotter spark. I have some tools, and it made sense to me to grind off the cup to make the hammer more fitting for the primer adapter. 209 Primers fire really hot. Had to do that because the rifle occasionally misfired. Whenever that happened...

Engraving on breech plug, newly found.

A pic of the whole rifle. Sorry it's the best I can do with this camera right now. BTW I'm doing all of this posting from my cell phone, without the benefit of a computer, because I live so far out in the sticks the only internet access is using a dish with HughesNet, whom I refuse to deal with...

Engraving on breech plug, newly found.

Someone asked me to identify my rifle, but it has no stampings or engravings on it at all, except for engravings on a facet of the hexagonal breach plug. I'm going to try to upload a picture of it in macro:

    Lock malfunctioning.

Rifle. This is the best I can do so far with my cell phones camera set on macro. When I attach this file, it appears as a thumbnail, but when I tap on the thumbnail it pops up to a full size picture and I can read the inscriptions on the breech plug. What I wonder is whether these inscriptions...

Names and numbers of gunsmith businesses

Under "lock malfunctioning" someone very kindly posted the name address and phone number of what he said is a very good muzzleloader gunsmith very near to me. I figured great, I should write this down, but I procrastinated thinking it would be there for a couple days. But for everybody's...

    Found identification markings.

The engravings are jet black from whatever gunk or coatings were on the breech plug before a sanded it. The breech plug is bright silver now, which makes the etching stand out clearly. So I have to figure out how to use macro and finish figuring out how to post pics to this forum
