Leaving pellets in muzzleloader - how long?

I used to gather some of those of the appropriate size (moose) to use as cushion wads in my SG and TG. I just trimmed the ends more or less square before loading over a card. I particularly loved it when doing demos for various youth groups; It put a whole new meaning to the phrase 'Shootin'...

    Ruger old army loads

My SS ruger always cut a perfect ring off the .457 balls. for target shooting, I used 15 gr.fff with enough corn meal over top to fill the chambers to within1/8'' of full, then jammed a ball down until it was flush, then a smear of crisco over every second ball. If I really wanted lots of...

    Fixable or not?

    Mine too.

    W.Richards 12GA

Those aren't the hammers that came with the gun. Bend them to fit.

    Screw angle

I would just grind the high side down to the right contour. I've seen more than one lop-sided tang screw. Once it is sin there, there's no reason to remove it again.

    Strap?

I made my horn 'strap' out of rawhide 3-strand rope that I twisted up. Sorry the pic doesn't show more.

Risks of measuring your charge with the spout/suggested charges? (percussion pistol)

Exactly! The spouts were originally noised about as 'safety spouts' because the valve would (theoretically at least) prevent a cook-off from igniting the entire container full of powder. I use the flask to load my single shots as well. I checked volumes a number of times, and even those small...

How To ? - Rust Prevention in Flash Hole and Hard to Reach Bore Areas

I wash the barrel out with hot tap water and dish detergent, pumping the water back and forth from a can in which the breech end is immersed (nipple in for the first few, then out for a lot more). The high pressure developed power washes the breech and flash channel, and pumping with...

    Build advice

I made mine brown. I finished the stock with a couple of coats of walnut minwax. Inside and out. I don't think there is a more durable finish that requires as little maintenance. My brass was all 'as cast' and required a lot of fine emery work to get it smooth enough to hit with the...

    accuracy

I can only say that I never noticed much difference, but I haven't shot much patchless. I find that patchless shooting fills the barrel with fouling to an incredible degree. I have often heard that the secret to accurate smoothbore shooting is enhanced by muzzle velocity; i.e., a fast ball...

WANTED Most basic (read cheap yet with plugs) powder horn from Canada idealy (no duty fees)

Once you have it in hand, you can try your hand at some carving or scrimshaw. Make it yours! I carved this 30 years ago. It started life as a garage sale find mounted with its twin on a plaque.

    Help with CVA Kentucky rifle

Most of the problems I have found with CVA products originate in the locks. To put it mildly, they are junk because the main springs are weak, the tumbler shaft rattles around in an oversized hole, etc. etc. Too much work to fix with only marginal improvement in some cases. My usual fix is to...

    Questions after range day

I sometimes see 'blood in the barrel' on damp days. Usually regarded as an indicator that all is working well. Someone previously said it is some kind of Sulphur compound. Sometimes appears as droplets at the muzzle. I have never noticed it in the pan

    Your Flintlock History

I got into bp in 1988 I went to our local range to watch some of the shooting events in our Provincial Summer Games. I found the small bore folks , and watched the 3position shooting, was impressed by their precision, but little else. Nobody was having fun! I heard some loud BOOMS from the...

    Bacon Grease

Drug companies made many millions selling anti-cholesterol drugs, so they pushed the bs. Don't blindly take whatever a doc prescribes. Look them up and make an informed decision before diving into the deep end. Your pharmacist is your friend in this; they know much more about the drugs than...

    Bacon Grease

We had a cook in our cookhouse that always kept a slab of ham/bacon rind for dressing the stove's grill surface. The cookhouse always smelled like bacon. Got the juices flowing halfway up the stairs.

2 Questions - Does cleaning patch size matter? - When do you need to re-blue your barrel?

I cut scrap flannel left over from making shirts, pyjamas, etc. into 3, 2 and 1" squares. I find the 2" best for my rifles, 1" for the pistols, 3" for the shotguns. When the shirts etc reach the end of life, they also get cut into patches. I have a cutting wheel that makes it easy. I...

    Powder Horn “Sidedness”

Even at the range, if I am not working on gun tuning, sighting, etc., I gear up like I am doing a trail; everything loaded 'out of my pockets'. (and no range rod) That way, when I do a trail, I know exactly where everything is, and how to access it without messing around. I am embarrassed for...
