Am I installing this nose cap right?

Bull in china shop method rarely works out well for intricacy.

    Let me see those smoothies

Oh, I like that turtle shell call idea, definitely going to make one of those! I'm into wing bone calls, bu that looks really cool...

Am I installing this nose cap right?

I think you got too aggressive in your sanding of the stock where it meets your nose cap. I am probably not qualified to help you out, but I leave the stock with plenty of mass left the file down area for the nose cap so it fits flush. Then remove additional wood from stock after fitting...

Midway - maybe wait a few months to order from them. . .while they work the kinks out.

I've never had a problem with Midway, ordered dozens of times from them. My last order was a certain hunting bullet for reloading a non-mentionable that I haven't been able to find for over a year and they emailed me that it was in stock.

    Tools for my first build

Do a search bud, lots of information here. But one of the most helpful tools that I've found other than chisels and such is a vise and has to be this one... https://www.woodcraft.com/products/woodriver-patternmakers-or-gunstock-carving-vise Good price too.

    Chambers English Fowler Completed!

Thanks, hopefully you get as good a stock as I did as far as how it was cut. It was smooth sailing the whole way through the build.

The Kibler Ash SMR, or WKU Round Two

I agree, if you want a beautiful ash stock like above get it while you can. While experts believe the species will survive due to some trees showing genetic natural resistance, most of the population will be decimated. Only took a couple years here.

The Kibler Ash SMR, or WKU Round Two

That's a great looking stock, wonderful figure! A little orange for my taste but that's only me.... Don't know about where you are but ash borer has decimated the trees around here. There is a +30 acre woods that was primarily ash west of my house that is all dead and rotting away. I have...

Hunting from a tree saddle with a flintlock LR

I have a saddle and have used it a few times, I'm not real fond of it. I'm on almost all private land so no real advantage over other stands. I'm considering selling it, especially since I'm going wooden long bow this year. I think it would be reasonable to shoot a rifle/flinter out of it, but...

    Chambers English Fowler Completed!

Thanks, it was a fun hunt. Had him at 20 yards for about 10 minutes strutting but he was behind brush. He left and I called him back with a gobble. Yes the wood was upgraded, I asked for best available. Since I had to wait so long for it Barbie waved the upcharge. Chambers is very good to...

    Chambers English Fowler Completed!

Rich, Yes it's a "fancy" side plate upgrade. As a matter of fact if you are thinking about doing that one I have an extra one and a thumb piece. I lost the side plate that came with the kit and had to order a second, of course I found it after the gun was complete. Decided against the thumb...

Wood margin around lock and side plate?

Much, much better! How about a couple side views?

Curly ash Kibler SMR…with some modifications

Normally Kibler's don't do it for me as they all look the same but that one has some character! Might be the nicest chunk of wood I've even seen on a muzzleloader.

Wood margin around lock and side plate?

Why would you say that? You have a lot of wood to work with there and can certainly shape it as to what Dave is suggesting.

Chambers English vs New England Fowlers

Guns from Chambers have pins. You will have to modify to use keys if that is your choice. I stuck with the pins...

    Goex buy online auction

Risky business selling powder when shipping it, especially black powder. Don't know about the buyer, but shipper is risking a lot...

Wood margin around lock and side plate?

Ignore that hole and keep going, you don't want it to look like a side slab of a 2x4. On another note, what's the deal with that touch hole insert? That looks like it might be too deep.

Wood margin around lock and side plate?

Yeah, that pin is going to be pretty much gone. I would fill it in and continue shaping then dovetail and solder a longer tab on the guard, so it is hidden behind lock and plate.

    How thin?

I just ordered one of those, wish I would have seen it years ago when I started building ML'ers... Will be great for bows as well!
