TOW Bucks County Rifle Kit Update

This video shows the final fitting of the Bucks County side opening patchbox. It is far from perfect, but it is as good as I can get it. Fred Lehto, who is an experienced builder of Bucks County rifles has graciously given me several pointers, as have several others. Unfortunately I'm too...

TOW Bucks County Rifle Kit Update

Fred, Once I started recording, I couldn't back out. In a sense, I'm "all in."... can't back out now. But I don't think I'll record the next build...maybe just show off some completed pictures (if it comes out well  )

TOW Bucks County Rifle Kit Update

That's what I used...still no picnic to drive the screws into an undersized, burned-in hole the first time...not even that easy the 10th time...LOL

TOW Bucks County Rifle Kit Update

I did, and I'm not sorry. I'll change then out to straight slots in the final prep, but have YOU tried to screw straight slot screws into a 90 degree, burned-in pilot hole using a bent shaft screw driver? Even with Philips heads it was difficult. I ruined a couple of screws and cut my hands up...

TOW Bucks County Rifle Kit Update

Here's the next installment in the Bucks county patchbox saga. This video shows how I buggered up the stock while cutting the storage compartment under the patchbox cover...it was crying time... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAvrZ4zVspc

    Bucks County Patchbox fitted

I appreciate it. Fred Lehto also told me this...the day after I did it the wrong way...which is the story of my life. LOL Looking at the Bucks rifles in RCA #1, it looked like the knuckle of the hinge went all the way over the butt plate, but there were no views of the back of the butt plate...

TOW Bucks County Rifle Kit Update

Yup, #24 shows the train wreck in all its glory.

TOW Bucks County Rifle Kit Update

Here is the first of three videos on fitting the side-opening patchbox. Fred Lehto has already told me of one significant thing that I did wrong (which will be in the third video). I'm sure the experienced guys will see other things I could do better. Feel free to tell me. It is the only way...

    Bucks County Patchbox fitted

Today I finished fitting the Bucks County side opening patchbox...What a slog! It is far from perfect, but it is as good as I can get it. I promise you this; this is both the first , and the last, side opening patchbox I'll ever do. My hat is off to Fred and the other builders who do these...

    Spiller & Burr Revolver

You can't load conicals because the bullet rammer is too long to accommodate them. Pietta made Remington .44s and .36s are both made on the .44 frame, which lowers production costs, but is historically incorrect...and it makes the Remington Navis very heavy. The S&B is considerably lighter.The...

    Spiller & Burr Revolver

It has been a tough Winter, but I finally got back out to the range to test the Spiller & Burr replica for my black powder column in "Guns of the Old West" magazine. Here's a video of the session, and a picture for your enjoyment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVyPTdHcCDI

    Recovery...sort of

I have one patchbox screw secured...what a bugger! One more to go.

    Recovery...sort of

Fred, I finished inletting the hinge plate. As you can see the shelf disappeared.

    Recovery...sort of

Fred that's not a ledge. I'm inletting the hinge plate straight down, but I'm doing it by applying transfer color and marching the hinge plate into final position a micron at a time. I still have about an eight of an inch of wood to remove before it is in its final position.

    Recovery...sort of

Well the patch is in place, and I'm working on getting the side tab of the patchbox inletted into the mortice. And it is a holy bugger to get in...still wondering how I'll screw it in place. I suppose I can drill the holes at an angle...or burn the screw holes into the wood... Why didn't...

    Bad day in the shop

"This Forstner bit was way too big for this size box imho. Half that size and then get the rest with a sharp chisel." Well Tecumtha, it's kind of a case of live and learn. This is the first time I attempted a patchbox this way, and I'm learning as I go. Next time I'll know more...but this...

Tetsa, I'm afraid it might look like a quilt before I'm done... LOL

    Bad day in the shop

Yeah Fred. That is exactly what happened

    Bad day in the shop

I was drilling out the recess for me patchbox, and everything went fine for the first three holes, but on my last hole the Forsner bit kicked out of the hole and gouged the side of the stock. I inletted a new piece of wood to patch it. I'll have to give it a day for the epoxy to set up strong...
