Squirrel Hunting- The Traditional Way Book

Tim, I agree a squirrel rig thread would be interesting, I think many of us would enjoy that. How about an eastern squirrel hunting rendezvous? I would retire to participate in that!

Squirrel Hunting- The Traditional Way Book

That's a Joe Schell rifle, I am very fortunate to own it. Thanks for the best wishes for my BIL. He is keeping positive, but treatments have limited how much hunting and fishing he can do. Hoping some good reading material will help him. And prayers of course. And by the way, ETipps book is...

Squirrel Hunting- The Traditional Way Book

Hello ETipp, Hope all is well. I am enjoying my copy of your book. Do you have any more for sale? I need one for my BIL. He's an avid hunter who is having some serious health issues. Hoping your fine book will keep him motivated to get out and hunt this fall. It will do him good. BTW, pic...

    TC Hawken

I get that, proof's in the pudding. But there is always more to learn and many of the members here have provide valuable, interesting information in their helpful replies.

    TC Hawken

Reading here about some of the safety/quality issues with the TC rifles I'd like to know more about the two I have. Is there a way to date a TC Hawken and Renegade from the serial number? Are there know manufacturing dates where safety of the rifles is a concern? Both of mine seem well built...

    TC Hawken

What is the favored loading method in the deer woods, loading blocks with preluded patches or carrying loose balls and cutting patch at the muzzle?

    TC Hawken

I appreciate all the load info and advice on stock alterations from everyone. I am looking forward to some range time and using this rifle in the deer stand this season. Keep sending pics I enjoy looking at them. Jeff

    TC Hawken

Thanks all for the many responses about killing effectiveness, loads and how to improve the TC Hawken. It’s obvious the gun has a loyal following. As soon as work allows I intend to shoot the rifle and then break it down for refinishing. I may reach out for advice of finishing products to use...

    TC Hawken

That’s the look I was thinking of, if I’m going to refinish to eliminate the dozens of scrapes and dents I might as well slim the wrist, lock panels etc.

    TC Hawken

Eric, is it possible to slim down the stock and wrist of the Hawken some without weakening the wrist? I think I saw a post from you where you had some experience refinishing and altering the stocks. Jeff

    TC Hawken

Plenty of evidence in these replys that round ball is working. Pictures are appreciated. I have a Renegade purchased new in 1982. Thought it would make a good hunting rifle but shoots way right and sights are horrible. I think the Hawken is the rifle I should have bought back then, seems...

    TC Hawken

Will round ball get the job done or do I need to consider conicals? Typical range and conditions for me (using unmentionables) is 50 to 75 yards and 80 pound whitetails.

    TC Hawken

Found this .50 TC Hawken at a not so local gun shop for $200. Decided to add it to the family in hopes of it becoming a practical deer rifle for the upcoming season. It bears a lot of scars from former use or abuse but I’ll test it’s accuracy before investing some refinish effort. Anybody here...

    SMALL CALIBER RIFLE BUILD

So, I received the 5/8 inch barrel and it is very slim. It’s going to be a challenge to proportion a southern rifle properly for this but going to give it a try. This might turn out to be more of a youth rifle but with the correct LOP. Should be a joy to carry in the squirrel woods. Jeff

    SMALL CALIBER RIFLE BUILD

Seems to be very proportional and a good looking rifle. Thanks, Jeff

    SMALL CALIBER RIFLE BUILD

Pete G. As I am not a builder (yet) I had to think about what you meant. It makes sense to me now and I appreciate the advice. Given the low cost of the plans for the Luster rifle I think I'll order them and proceed. Thanks all, Jeff

    SMALL CALIBER RIFLE BUILD

Beautiful rifle RobertE. The open grain in that stock is a look that I can appreciate. Do you happen to know the weight? Jeff

Thanks RobertE. If you have pics of your Luster inspired rifle I’d like to see it. Jeff

    SMALL CALIBER RIFLE BUILD

Hello all, I bought a .29 caliber x 39 inch barrel because the opportunity came up. Now I have to turn that purchase and the desire for a flintlock squirrel rifle into reality. 39 inches probably lends itself better to a half-stock cap lock but I already have several of those. The Zachariah...
