    12L14 barrel comes apart

12L14 is a mild carbon steel, and has a small percentage of lead added to make it a free-machining steel. It is often used for muzzleloader barrels and .22 rimfire barrels. It is strong enough for typical muzzleloader charges, but does not have the safety margin of higher-alloyed steels, which...

    Lets see some flintlock pistols!

When this thread was active, I couldn't find where I'd hidden this one (from myself!): It's a sort of Continental Officer's pistol, 20 bore, with cherry wood stock and belt clip, by Claude (Pappy) Suffolk, and signed by him. It's one of my favorite shooters, and shoots very well... mhb - MIke

    What will turn aluminum black

FWIW: the anodizing die will probably only work properly on a freshly anodized workpiece rather than a previously finished, worn or polished piece. The Birchwood-Casey aluminum blacking solution will work on any aluminum surface, so long as the instructions are followed. mhb - MIke

    Help with ID.

Yours is a very typical example of a South East Asian 'monkey gun'. These are simple, often blacksmith-built smallbore muzzleloaders made for hunting by the native peoples, often hilltribes. Barrels are mostly made from seamless steel tubing of ca. 1/2" bore, sold in local markets. Shooters...

    Flexing a barrel

Altering the sights is a far better plan than bending the barrel in cut-and-try fashion. mhb - MIke

    Lets see some flintlock pistols!

Here's another one - one of my regular shooters. I don't know who made it, or when, but it is nicely done. The lock is Spanish (modern), but has been worked-over, and the frizzen has been properly hardened and tempered, so it is very reliable. It's a .45, and rifled: quite accurate. The wire...

    Lets see some flintlock pistols!

I've posted this before, but my avatar is my J. Probin (Maker to His R.H. the Prince of Wales) 20 bore officer's dueller, ca. 1785. I shoot it, and it is pictured on a target shot with it at 12 yards, in duelling cadence (shot fired within 3 seconds, from the lowered position). mhb - MIke

    Slowest Twist

My Parker-Hale Volunteer is rifled 1 in 20", which is correct for .45 bullets of this length and weight. This is also the standard rifling pitch for the U.S. .45-70 arms, which use essentially the same bullets. That pitch will stabilize these bullets to any reasonable range - if you decide that...

    Pietta NM Remington 'Shooter's Model'

Wow! It had been so long since I posted the original item (and since the last response) that it never occurred to me to check back on this thread. As it happens, I just recently found a Pietta NMA at the local swap meet, which looked good and which I got for a VERY favorable price, as part of...

    Music for Canon Battles

Personally, I like the pipes, if properly played with an appropriate choice of tune. I have heard them badly played, and that's a different tune.... :) I have also noticed that, on St. Andrew's day, they pipe-in the haggis, but the whiskey often precedes it. mhb - MIke

Aye. The regimental pipers blaring 'The Battle o' Killiecrankie', and it's "Up the Kilties!" - The Ladies from Hell! mhb - MIke

    Music for Canon Battles

As for martial music, suitable for all occasions, I have to agree with Kipling that there is nothing like the pipes: he said they always made him want to kill somebody... mhb - MIke

    Music for Canon Battles

The 1812 is certainly appropriate for any battle featuring cannon. But, for truly canonical battles, I would suggest 'Ein Feste Burg', Martin Luther's old anthem. mhb - MIke

    Music for Canon Battles

Ahem: "Canon" battles (among or between senior churchmen, presumably over dogma) haven't been settled with cannon in several centuries, at least among Christian factions.... Appropriate music would presumably be liturgical. :) mhb - MIke

gun show find - percussion long gun

That is by far the best native-made lock from SEA I've ever seen, and the only bridled lock, though the tumbler does not have an internal trunnion. This is just more evidence of the workmanship of the maker - the barrel even has a hooked breech! FWIW, the lock and sideplate are probably made...

gun show find - percussion long gun

This is a very high-end example of a native-made 'monkey gun', common to SE Asia. It is much better made and finished than the typical example, and shows extra care and attention to details, such as the hammer (which is not taken from a European arm), and the folding ramrod. These are in...

    Hamilton Burr duel commemorative set

Dave: Thank you for your response. I was aware of the geometry of Wogdon's barrels, both internal and external, and cannot say (for lack of evidential facts) that the screw attachment of the weights to the original barrels was not done in the manner you suggest. But you are obviously aware...

    Hamilton Burr duel commemorative set

Dave: No, but perhaps I misunderstood what you meant. But, let me ask you: do you believe the reproduction locks are internally a fair representation of Wogdon's work; and, do you know of any other instance of a contemporary of Wogdon's (or any other maker before or since, for that matter)...
