    Just arrived: 1861 Springfield

If the entire barrel is not replaced, the wood behind the breach/bloster will just wear away from the spark of the caps. Which is just one reason I say its a parts gun. With that amount of corroded metal at the breach/bolster there is no way the wood would still be there, it would have just...

    Just arrived: 1861 Springfield

Looking at the area behind the nipple, the metal is corroded away, wood is not, wood would be burned away with that much corrosion of the metal. Corrosion of the bolster area does not match that of the lock. wear on the lock does not match the hammer, and nothing matches the conditon of the...

    Just arrived: 1861 Springfield

It is not an original, it is a musket built with original parts.

Opinions on a Springfield 1842 "shorty"

In Confederate Muskets and Musketoons youll find the most information on smoothbores under Macon and Richmond Armouries Its a fine looking musketton whom ever made it, shoot it and enjoy it!! And yes the books are expencive but are well worth it for doing research on Civil War era firearms, many...

Opinions on a Springfield 1842 "shorty"

Very nice cutdown musket, but it is not a Macon conversion nor is it an 1847. Judgeing by the finish on the stock it looks like it is a modern modification. The Macon Arsenal did the the most if not all 1842 cutdowns. 30, 34 or 36 inches with 2 and 3 bands. 3 bands had 3 band springs but the 2...

Going from wheel weight to pure ML lead. ¿Possible?

Ive used WW and some other super hard lead for years in my 1842 Springfield. The lead was so hard that the round balls would break apart out of the mold. So I would cast and drop them in a 5 gallon bucket of water to cool them fast and keep them round.......but they shot great! And it was a...

    Couple Carbines I made

Dave I made mine with a Springfield lock like a battlefield pick up and repair. Also built a Harpers Ferry 1841 conversion with the long range rear sight like a 55 rifle, also put a Whitacre barrel on that too. My 55 rifle, Harpers Ferry and Richmond musketoon all use the same load!!!! really...

    Couple Carbines I made

When I 1st started skrimishing with the N-ssa I used a Smith Carbine but after building my Richmond musketoon I found it shot the same load as my 1855 rifle. So out of ease of only haveing to make 1 type of ammo, I retired my Smith.

    Couple Carbines I made

I made a Richmond Musketoon from an 1861 Springfield repro, put a Whitacre .577 barrel on it with a 1-72 twist.

Anyone shooting paper cartridges in 36 & 44 caliber?

Yes very easy to use. put your measured powder charge inside and cork it with your ball. Ive had a few go threw the washing machine and the powder stayed dry! Tubes themselves are washable, just put them in one of those net laundry bags and toss it in the washing machine, Let them air dry for a...
