Do's and Don'ts when buying first BP shotgun

The one I use is a beat up original Belgian double from the 1880s. It’s a 16 gauge and kills everything I shoot at with it. I bought it years ago on gunbroker for like $100, cleaned it up and it’s been as reliable as a new one. Just keep looking and something will come up for sale.

Do's and Don'ts when buying first BP shotgun

If you’re buying new then you’re pretty much stuck with buying a Pedersoli. To my knowledge they are the only company that currently makes doubles. Taylor’s or anyone else selling new doubles may advertise them with their name “taylors” or whoever but they are still Pedersolis. There are some...

    Parker Hale Whitworth breech/ignition issues

I’m guilty of over oiling my guns for storage. Prior to shooting I fold up a cleaning patch and put it on the nipple and ease the hammer down on it. I use carb cleaner or brake cleaner to wash out any oils. Spray it down the barrel, swish it around and dump it out. I do that a few times then set...

Regrets with L and R lock for Traditions?

The last one I messed with had a stiff spring like that. I compressed it a little in a spring vise over night, reinstalled it and it worked like a champ.

    Long Barrels And Round Ball

I can’t answer your question directly but I do dig a lot of shot roundballs out of the dirt and most of them are still perfectly round. Some could be loaded and shot again.

Regrets with L and R lock for Traditions?

If your traditions rifle is an old one just order a new traditions frizzen. The new frizzens seem to be hardened correctly and much better than the ones on older rifles. I’ve messed with a few recently. Cheap enough to give it a shot.

    Sows ear CVA Hawken.

I just used a folded up cotton cleaning patch to apply it.

    Cooking Oils as patch lubes

Same with me. I tried the bore butter years ago, then Dutch’s dry lube patch method for a really long time and other concoctions. Nowadays I just use spit or windshield washer fluid in a squirt bottle (store bought spit). For hunting I stick with mink oil. I hit what I shoot at and normally win...

I may put the cva front sight back on it. It’s ugly but it’s fat with a bead. I can’t see this one hardly at all.

Well I put some balls down range just now. Rear sight is still in the browning process so ignore the rust. This target is at 50 yards. Had to file the rear way down to get it on paper then it was hitting way right. Once I was on paper I just started drifting the sight one shot at a time until I...

Can I use lead shot in a Cold Walker?

A judge doesn’t shoot bird shot worth a s#*t either.

    Double barrel shotgun

Pull off of the barrels and take some pics of the proof marks on the underside of the barrel. Without seeing the proofs it’s all just guessing.

    Uberti Serial Numbers

Ignore the serial numbers and find the date code. All of these Italian guns have them. It’s it’s fairly new it’ll be two letters inside of a box. If older refer to this chart.

    Plastic shot wads

I use them all the time. If you use a wad of tow between the cup and powder it greatly reduces any melting of the cup. If you use cards instead of tow after several shots there will be some stringy plastic residue left in the bore. It’s no biggie as it comes out with a cleaning patch. It does...

    Lyman Great Plains Rifle Question

Yep as Phil said. The fella that built it removed the dictionary of warnings prior to browning the barrel. If the date code is gone you’ll never know. Doesn’t really matter because they are all the same. All Great Plains rifles were built by Investarm. Investarm still makes them today branded as...

Yeah it is. Here are some pics of it from the auction sight I got it from. No figure in the wood and covered with chattered machine marks from when the stock was cut.

Yep. Got a brass blade coming for the front and one of the screw adjustable rear sights from track of the wolf. Those boxy rear sights that come on CVA guns are hideous.

    It’s a 50. That’s one caliber I haven’t had in years so I ordered a mold when I ordered sights from Track.

FOR SALE Want to buy; used Pedersoli rifled .45 ca. LePage flintlock target pistol w/single-set trigger.

Be aware that you’re probably gonna get messages from a few scammers. They live for “wanted” posts.

I used an ancient bottle of Mountain state muzzleloading barrel browning solution. I’m pretty sure it’s the same stuff as Laurel mountains solution. I used it the same as I’ve used Laurel mountain.
