    Lead balls have casting imperfections

Honestly my cast balls with a sprue shoot just as good if not better than swagged store bought round balls. In rifles I load sprue up.

Overshot card versus over powder card

I just use two thin cards over powder and two over shot. When out hunting I don’t feel like fumbling for a bunch of different components trying to reload. It kills what I aim at. I have a whole drawer full of wads, TOW and nitro cards that never get used.

    Pedersoli locks bad?

I have a flint mortimer rifle, trade gun, Bess and used to have a .32 Kentucky. Never an issue with any of them except the Mortimer. I broke a main spring on it shooting a match but it’s also almost forty years old. I currently use a 30+ year old percussion Pedersoli Tryon for matches. Never an...

    1853 Enfield range fun

If you ever get frustrated with minies or wanna try something different get some .562 roundballs. I tried 570s and they were too big. My Parker hale musketoon will make one ragged hole at 50 yards with the .562 cast balls with 60 grains of 3F or 70 of 2F.

    Showing off a little.

Well I got it back out today for some more experimenting. I’ve settled on 20 grain of 3F, really thin patch. Closer to .05 than .010 thin. 445 cast ball, spit lube, and no wiping between shots. Gonna have to take a little off the front sight, but I’ll do some offhand shooting with it first. I...

    Hawken accuracy problem

Don’t move to 50 yards until you find a load that is shooting one ragged hole at 25 yards. Use bags front and back on your bench. You stated you shoot decent at 25. Decent at 25 yards won’t cut it. One ragged hole then try 50. If you are shooting one ragged hole at 25 and you can’t hit paper at...

    Two no fires while hunting

Simple answer is that your barrel was contaminated with oil, water, fouling or whatever. I always use brake cleaner with a pulled nipple to clean, degrease and dry my gun before loading. If your powder was not contaminated, and the flash channel was clean and dry the guns would have fired.

    Cylinder filler

    Exactly!!

    Cylinder filler

For targets I put 20 grains of cream of wheat over 18-20 grains of 3F in all my 44 revolvers. Brings the ball fairly close to the chamber mouth once seated. I have a separate flask filled with cream of wheat just for this purpose.

No sir I sure don’t. I’ll ask him when I see him again.

    Showing off a little.

A good friend of mine finished this pistol up for me a couple weeks ago. I’m a tree guy and I asked him to find a piece of curly ash for the build since ash trees are becoming a thing of the past. I’m gonna use it in my shooting matches. I love it. Rice barrel with an LC Rice lock. He had some...

    Dawn and water patch lube

Just use straight -0° windshield washer fluid. It’s already mixed and works the same except it evaporates faster.

    New Oldstock Goex pistol powder

The can is cool but they are a dime a dozen. The powder is as good as the day it was made. Save the can and shoot the powder. Nothing worthwhile in saving the powder. Heck I take new BP and pour mine into one of those old cans with a pour spot on it for the range.

    Tungsten Powder

You’re thinking too hard Mr. Nav. Pure lead has worked since cavemen first starting harvesting dinosaurs with matchlocks.

Lymans great planes rifle barrel, want more twist.

Race what you brought to the track! A 50 or 54 caliber with 1:60ish twist with a round ball will kill anything in North America. With a faster twist you’ll lose accuracy with a roundball and need a conical. 1:48 is ok for roundball but faster isn’t. Don’t overthink things. Worry more about shot...

One piece stock for CVA Kentucky rifle?

The only full stock rifle that traditions ever made without the brass disc was the Shenandoah. They are scarce and his lock will most likely drop right in but the barrel and tang will not.

What a time to try this hobby.

Let this shortage be a valuable lesson for the future. Political climates dictate guns, ammo, primer and powder sales/demand. If we are lucky enough to get a Republican in the White House the next election hopefully things will settle down. When they do plan for the future because it will happen...

One piece stock for CVA Kentucky rifle?

As the posters above have stated….you’re not gonna find one because they never existed. A custom stock for your hardware is your only option.

    Frequent Long Rifle Barrel Removal?....NO!

I built one and pinned it in 2001 without coating it with anything. Hunted and shot matches with it for 20 years. Last year I wanted to refresh refinish the stock. Took it apart and it was just like it was when I put it together. No rust or even any dirtiness.

Recently Purchased A Lyman GPR 1979 - A Few Questions

If your lock has a coil spring instead of a flat spring then it’s most likely the one that came with the rifle. All aftermarket locks use flat springs.
