Hard, brittle, and fast PRB for more damage?

What is your goal? In general, slower speed means more penetration, less projectile deformation inside the animal, and a smaller wound channel, But you might be more likely to get an exit. Higher speed is just the opposite, except then you can extend your range out further. Since you're not...

Hard, brittle, and fast PRB for more damage?

I really enjoy the tracking aspect of it too, when there is a blood trail to follow! Tracking elk without a blood trail or fresh snow is not fun and very gut-wrenching

Hard, brittle, and fast PRB for more damage?

To be clear, I'm not attempting to turn a PRB into something like a modern jacketed bullet at high speed. I have merely wondered if you were to shoot a deer or elk broadside going for double lung, with a high speed ball that is brittle and would fragment, if it would produce a faster kill than a...

Hard, brittle, and fast PRB for more damage?

I had been thinking of a way to get more damage and a faster kill with a PRB. You see this with modern bolt gun ammo... the more explosive the bullet, the more damage to vitals it does and thus a faster death for the game. I realize we're talking apples and oranges here, but it's something I'd...

Hunting loads for my .58 black powder rifle

Grrw-CA is green river rifle works collectors association, I believe. The CA rifles are more recently made... They didn't come out of the original grrw shop.

Flintlock accuracy and need help finding load

I've also got some joanns "bull denim" that measures 0.019ish with my calipers compressed. They're a bit easier to get started than the 12oz/0.023 denim. Both of them go down super smooth after the first 4-6 inches. I don't know if I've noticed an accuracy difference between them... Probably...

Hunting loads for my .58 black powder rifle

We like to say and think that is what hunting is, but all hunting is is the taking of wild game. Indians, fur trappers, whoever.... Have always gone after the most advanced technology they could get their hands on for hunting or defense when it became available. Whatever gives an edge is what...

Flintlock accuracy and need help finding load

That's where I'm at 😳 how embarrassing. I just read that "how do you prime" thread and was surprised to see so many people say they use the "doohickey" that drops 3gr at a time. I use one of those and plunge it until the pan is full. Learned something new! I'm excited to save some 4f and...

Flintlock accuracy and need help finding load

Also a great suggestion... I haven't thought about priming minimally... It is that pan explosion that makes me want to flinch

Flintlock accuracy and need help finding load

Thanks. I'll try that next time although I'm not sure about the prone position with this gun. It's heel drop and butt plate shape make it pretty hard to shoot comfortably prone, but I'll try it. This colerain is either 66" or 70" twist. I can't remember which. 70gr 3f would be similar to...

Flintlock accuracy and need help finding load

I'll have to go to another range next time and gather patches . The range I was at I'm not able to cross the firing line.

Looking for a good flintlock shooter in Utah

I'm needing someone to shoot my flintlock some to help get it zeroed, find accurate load, and see what hat accuracy potential is. I live in salt lake county. I'd be ok with a couple hour drive.

Hunting loads for my .58 black powder rifle

I'd also keep track of your first round hit rate for vitals sized target from that distance with the same exact rest after doing a jumping jacks. I'd equate that shot to a CF bolt rifle at 700 yards. Most people shouldn't be shooting that far at game

Flintlock accuracy and need help finding load

Here's a few targets from 50 yards. Various charges of 2f. I'm pretty sure I wasn't flinching as badly as these make it look.

    Thanks. I will try that.

Hunting loads for my .58 black powder rifle

If you are locked into that long shot, I'd go with a higher charge and a further zero. If you're accurate enough and you often have have long shots, why not zero at 125-150?

Yes, see my previous post. The patch doesn't have any tears or burn through

Flintlock accuracy and need help finding load

I've lots of experience in shooting accurately with my CF rifle, so just didn't think to include the other specifics as I know they're not a factor. It's a colerain 58 round/deep groove, 36" x1", shooting 0.570 hand cast balls within a 1gr weight spread, schuetzen 2f, with 12oz denim from...

Flintlock accuracy and need help finding load

My flintlock shooting is incredibly horrendous. Like ... I'm doing absolutely great if I can hold a 3" group at 50. I have no problems with ignition reliability. It's a chambers late ketland and seems plenty fast as long as I keep the frozen clean and flint sharp. I can't tell if the poor...
