    Weighing Swaged Round Balls

I think the shooter certainly is the biggest reason for variation in accuracy, except for maybe the competition guys shooting from the bench. They can probably tell a difference. I can't! I just thought it was surprising and interesting. My biggest reason for using cast balls is due to the...

    Weighing Swaged Round Balls

This a slightly old thread and it looks like it's been discussed many times, but I was curious this morning and did some measurements with my expensive scale. It is kind of surprising that even my poor group of cast balls (some junk in surface and some small "pits") were so much more...

    Bear Grease Question

Thank for the information. Bumblin bear grease is sold by October Country and it's a mixture of bear oil and beeswax, with a few other items mixed in. Someone in another thread, or maybe earlier in this thread, said they contacted October Country and they said it was about 10-15% beeswax.

    Bear Grease Question

I was just thinking of trying it because I was going to get some balls and flints from October country. But, the bumbling bear stuff is so pricey I think it would actually be cheaper to just buy the mink oil from track and pay the extra shipping

    Bear Grease Question

I've been thinking of getting some of this bumbling bear grease to try. I currently use tracks mink oil. How do the two compare? Is the bumbling bear grease a lot slicker? Does either one keep the fouling down better than the other with a tight patch? Does the POI change drastically between...

    About your hunting rifles

Steel. The patchbox sure was hard to get bent just right. The plan is to either slightly patina everything after engraving, or just let it patina naturally, but it will all stay in the white. No blueing.

    About your hunting rifles

I'm working on turning this into a beater. I built it for hunting as well as fondling. No game has been taken with it yet. I still need to learn to engrave so I can complete that part and then "age" it a bit.

    About your hunting rifles

How many elk have you taken with the 58? What was the shot distance and how much penetration and ball expansion did you get? I have a 58 I built for hunting, primarily elk, and I'm a bit conflicted with a higher charge for flat shooting and ball expansion or getting more penetration on close...

    Unbeatable bore rust

Looking at it under a bore scope, it sure looked like rust to me. I never left all the wd40 in there, but double tight patch it out and then use my other oil. And I don't think that wd40 would have been in there long enough to turn to varnish. This time, I did use some acetone to remove the...

    New peep sight.

I'd like to do this, but I don't think my ability to drill a hole square to the surface is Good enough for a peep site. Did you use a drill press or drill by hand?

    Unbeatable bore rust

Yea the ability to look in the bore is great but can also breed anxiety and tail chasing. I just use it to gauge how well my cleaning practices work or look to see if there's something majorly wrong with a CF chamber like a burr or similar... and nothing more. Let the target tell you if your...

    Unbeatable bore rust

I'll definitely try cleaning it with molasses next time I see some rust come back. How diluted should it be? Just soak? And for how long? My barrel was clean when I shot it the first time. I built the rifle using a new barrel. There was a little bit of rust in there when I got to cleaning it...

    Unbeatable bore rust

Here's a video of my bore I just took. This is after multiple rounds of 3m pad and 0000 steel wool scrubbing, VERY tight on a jag. It is vastly improved compared to where it started a year ago. I unfortunately don't have any pictures from then. I just did another round a couple days ago, being...

    Unbeatable bore rust

I should have been more accurate in my statement. There's no proof that it will allow rust over time, but I did get rust when I used it. I looked into the soluble part more...It actually creates an emulsion with water, leaving the oil behind when the water dries. I think so. I'll get a couple...

    Unbeatable bore rust

I have not tried barricade but have always heard good things. I'll try that. I've tried a couple others. Hoppes, Lucas, ballistol (now know ballistol is water soluble and will allow rust over time). I did use hot water before but was seeing flash rust spots so I now use cold. Colerain. It's...

    Unbeatable bore rust

That's really strange. Is that to remove the rust without having to scrub it with steel wool? Not that I won't try something new, but it seems like I've tried everything. No pyrodex has been used! Only BP I live in Utah and it's not particularly humid in my house. 🤔 I have no issues with any...

    Unbeatable bore rust

Have any of you guys encountered unbeatable rusting of the bore? I've been scratching my head for quite awhile on why my bore keeps rusting, albeit slowly over multiple shoots. I do absolutely everything I can and what others suggest to combat it, but it always ends up coming back after...

    Getting there !

Strangely, I'm a very very good shot with my compound bow. I can watch the arrow all the way to the target and don't see the string or peep at all when releasing. I can do ok with my flintlock when rested on a bench and concentrating extremely hard, but I still blink and fight the urge to curl...

    Sandcasting Flintlock Parts

That is awesome.... Both the gun and the furniture. Congrats! What's the next project?

    Percussion cap tins

Using the 22 reloader mix? Is that the old corrosive mercury type?
