    Mortimer

Probably a little too late in the day for the guys knowledgeable on the topic to participate. There's quite a few here that I think would love to discuss the topic.

    What's up with Flints?...

Are there any good threads here or videos on freshening the edge that someone can link? I've heard of knapping in the jaws, but not sure how that would work.

    I made a rifle

My first build, so yes. I can imagine they are a lot more work than pins!;it took me awhile to get the mortise cut out enough to use the heated key trick. I didn't slot them to capture them. They're snug enough I have no worry of them falling out and I really didn't like the idea of having them...

    I made a rifle

Notchy Bob, thank you very much. And thank you very much for always providing some education to our discussions! I'm very excited to read the memoir you linked. Another apparently brilliant gunsmith of the same era or slightly earlier is John Small of Vincennes, IN. He also built a rifle for...

    I made a rifle

It's pretty close to 3/16". I wanted a thicker/beefier wrist and forestock like what I've seen in a few original Hawkens

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. Yes, that Louie Parker. He took measurements of the original and made a copy of the Creamer rifle.

    I made a rifle

Hi All, I built a rifle. It is done, with the exception of the engraving. It will take me a long time to learn that and I'll get it added eventually, so I'm calling this rifle ready to start getting beat up. It started as a Jim Beckwourth rifle, and then became something inspired by the...

Testing new brand of black powder

@ftg99 , would you care to share what wood is used for your charcoal? I expect this to be proprietary information, but just wondered if you could share. Wood type used for the charcoal is often a large factor in speed and fouling characteristics

FOR SALE RCBS .580 MINIE MOLD

I don't know anything about minies, but I am assuming that these wouldn't work for a colerain round groove .58 with 66 twist, right? Wouldn't the grooves be too deep to work and twist too slow?

    Fixing Locks

Dave, thanks for providing this information. I love learning from your excellent tutorials. Would it be possible to show some of the tools you use for your lock work? Examples of what I'm thinking are: lathe for turning screws, whatever you use for locating and drilling holes, reamers for...

    Hawken Help

I'll add that if you get cabinet scrapers, get the thinner ones so that they're easy to bend to conform to curves. I got thicker ones and wish I had the thin ones
