    Cannon Powder Charge Methods

I proofed it with 2.5 oz of 3f and about 2 lbs of lead. Normally I'm just shooting about a 1 oz charge with a 1 lb projectile. I made some cannon balls out of lead that weigh 1 1/8 lb. Going to remotely proof those before I feel comfortable touching those off! If I use this barrel I want to...

    My New Cannon Barrel

That is very cool how you made that from a solid piece. Do people usually weld or braze on the trunnions? Great work!

    Cannon Powder Charge Methods

I ordered some 1/4" and planned to go that route. I need to at the very least do a bit of contour work and build a proper carriage. Would like to get it on bigger wheels or possibly turn it into some kind of swivel gun.

    Cannon Powder Charge Methods

It's ugly right now! Haha kind of a scrapyard special. I'm not sure if I'm going to even use this or just use what I learned to build a brass scale model. The recoil is ridiculous with 1.750" projectiles so I will probably scale back my bore size.

    Cannon Powder Charge Methods

I ordered some smaller round stock. Only had bigger stuff in stock here in the shop. Would have been hammering for awhile. I shot a couple blanks earlier. With a twist of my mop, out came any foil remnants. Along with the worm I need to make slow match and a holder for it. @Dale Allen...

    Cannon Powder Charge Methods

That could be the ticket. I used heavy duty foil and maybe if I used some thinner stuff it will stay cleared out.

    Cannon Powder Charge Methods

I do mop the bore with a wet mop. Just didn't expect the foil to stick in there. First tool I made is a mop and a jag/ramrod. I guess I should have laid out my complete loading procedure so I wouldn't have received a post like this. If following necessary precautions is lucky than I guess...

    Cannon Powder Charge Methods

Sure! I had an idea how to start but never had made anything quite like that.

    Cannon Powder Charge Methods

Ok that makes sense. Yeah I am in the testing stage to see what works. I see how the worm fits the bore of the cannon so it allows it to scrape the breech consistently to pick up any remnants of foil. Sometimes improvising is necessary! That will make a fun forging project.

Great thanks for the input fellas!

    Cannon Powder Charge Methods

Maybe I can find some of those silk shirts that used to be fashionable in the 1980/90's! lol

    Cannon Powder Charge Methods

Silk sounds expensive and unobtainable. I thought about trying some different papers. News paper or tissue paper was an idea. It might build up in there also. Might have to make a better worm. Right now I just use a bent piece of stainless welding wire. I do kind of think it looks tacky...

    Cannon Powder Charge Methods

I was out testing my "Napoleon" test bore on New Years. After a few firings I had some serious delays on ignition. I was loading it with aluminum foil powder charges and found that much of the aluminum foil stays in the bore plastering onto the breach. I am thinking about using something...

    1861 Springfield

Just missed a couple of rustier Springfields on an auction. Some went for around $350! Might throw in a higher max bid for this next auction. Yep all the more shootable examples I'm seeing are up there in price. If I could find one with a serviceable lock, stock, and hardware I would be...

    1861 Springfield

I saw that rifle on there. Will they come down on their prices as I saw that one you describe listed for $1350 I believe. They have a Mason for $1800 that is pretty slick. It they would come down a touch that would be a great deal.

    1861 Springfield

That is a fine example! Very nice. I would say that is plenty fair as lodgewood has one maybe just slightly more brand new looking than yours for $3500!

    1861 Springfield

That sounds like a great idea. I was also looking at the Rifle Shoppe. Looks like they can piece one together. I'm growing more and more leery of Italian reproductions the more I see if them. If the proper deal could be had then great but $1500 for a pedersoli seems a bit steep. I would...

    1861 Springfield

Thanks for your response. Hopefully I can find some closer to look at. I dislike the idea of buying one from online auctions as you don't know what you bought really until you finally received it.

To bend your barrel or not that is the question?

I am not even seeing a rear sight on there. Add a rear sight....lol
