Does anyone remember this cool rifle?

Are you a member on American longrifle forum? I'm fairly certain the thread was there under the BP shooting subforum

Let's Talk About Real Pine Tree Turpentine and BLO.

Real gum turp is made by slashing the bark and outer wood layer of the "slash" pine tree, collecting the rosin, and distilling it. Hardware store stuff is often made from leftover from lumber production wood (not sure what all parts), I believe by adding a solvent or some other chemical but I...

    The Future of Traditional Muzzleloaders?

I'm a little more worried about parts suppliers for ML builders. Most of those companies are run by older guys and their families. Most of their customers are older, I would guess. Hopefully there continues to be enough interest in building to support these suppliers. Thanks Kibler...

    Ram Rod Drill Bit

Did you use a mill to cut that flute or use something else? Wonder if it would be very hard to cut the flute with a Dremel and then clean it up with files

    Deer Hide Day 3

Are you going to show the rest of the process? I'd like to watch :)

First and Last Barrel Channel Finished.....Pic Heavy

I think mine took twice as long as yours! 36 hours doesn't sound too bad. It looks great. You should build more. As bill said, the second will go way faster.

Lee molds, why I like them.

I have not yet. I know they make custom sizing dies but assumed they wouldn't do molds. I will call them. Thanks!

Lee molds, why I like them.

I do not have a mold yet. Can everyone send a suggestion to Lee to make a 0.570 rb mild so that I can love them too?

58 Colonial and The Bull Elk

Thanks for the extension your story and the extra photos! I'm dying to get my rifle finished and get out into the woods after elk with it next season.

58 Colonial and The Bull Elk

Beautiful story, elk, and execution on following up on that first shot @freedom475 . Thanks for sharing. I haven't hunted elk with a ML yet, but I can't imagine the adrenaline and anxiety that may come along with not being able to see through the smoke after the shot.

    Backpacking with longer rifles

If you look up exo mountain packs, they have a gun carrier that can be attached to your pack to have the butt ride lower than the belt. I have one and like it but have only used it with bolt gun. I would think it would work ok for a muzzy

    Show your Muzzleloading gems.

Thanks. It's from a blank. It's inspired by the Philip Creamer rifle built for William Clark. It won't be a bench copy but have many of the same features. Still need to do patchbox and cheek inlay, then stain.

    Heat treating forge/setup

@Trapper Scott , is that Mr volcano forge big enough to fit buttplates and trigger guards in? I've been wanting to try to make some and would rather braze instead of solder for strength. Having a mini forge would be more useful to me than getting an acetylene torch setup

Aqua Fortis and Lye on Walnut, An Experiment

As far as strong bases vs strong acids and their reactivity with other substances, it depends entirely on the chemical, it's concentration, and the material it's in contact with. Lye will react with the zinc that is in brass. Any oxidation from getting it on inlays or patchboxes should be...

Aqua Fortis and Lye on Walnut, An Experiment

I did a little bit of reading on ammonia fuming. It's essentially the same as using lye. The alkaline substance reacts with the tannins in the wood and darkens it. Ammonia fuming is commonly used on cherry, oak, etc. Higher tannin woods. It is a method of artificially aging cherry...

Aqua Fortis and Lye on Walnut, An Experiment

I think lye may be commonly used on cherry. I'm not sure if that is a historical method for cherry staining though

    Sprue orientation

Any measurable reduction in ball diameter? Is your HF mill spinning at the factory speed? I've got one but sped it up for powder milling.

    Sprue orientation

Someone mentioned... What did the old timers do way back in the earlier days when using bag molds? I would also like to know. Did they load sprue up? Not worry about it?

    Alaskan 54 poor boy.

I'm excited to see the ongoing progress. Please keep sharing!
