Stopping power of the 1860 Colt

Back to the "stopping power" question... True enough. And we have to remember that back in 1863, even a .36 cal ball to the stomach area could be fatal due to infection -- many days or weeks later. (Sounds like a painful way to go...) Whether that stopped the fight at the moment or not...

WITHDRAWN Looking for a T/C Hawken .50 caliber barrel

That's how an octagon barrel is measured -- across the "flats" (and not point-to-point). ...Hope the vice had padded jaws... (Been then, you'll be getting another one anyway...) Old No7

Aging a Confederate D Guard Bowie Knife

Now don't all too excited, as this isn't a great knife... I'm not a builder, so I didn't put it in that forum, and stuck it here... I recently bought a cheap $30 made-offshore D Guard Bowie. I'd bet that one whack on a watermelon would cause the "full length tang" to break -- that's cause it's...

    Shootout..Beauty vs The Beast

You didn't say, but I'm guessing you used the same load for the Remmy? I'd give it a fair shake and try it some more; maybe measure the bore and chambers (it could need a ball 0.003" larger than the other) and try different loads. The same thing can happen with "unmentionable handguns" that...

Deburring & Cleaning the Flash Channel of TC's Patent Breech

Good eye, and good question! No, none. I left the tag end of string uncoated, so was careful to only pull back & forth after the string laden with lapping compound was past the threads. Thanks Dave, I do have a TC scraper shaped like the chamber too, but I find that brush I posted above does...

Deburring & Cleaning the Flash Channel of TC's Patent Breech

Thanks for looking. * * *UPDATE * * * I got 100% ignition!! -- and some nice groups at 50 yards today (despite the cold, high wind and snow squall) for 12 shots. Fired 6, then swabbed the barrel several times, and used the brush shown below to scrub the patent breech, then wiped it out with a...

    Thompson center inter changability

Those older TC 56 smoothies shoot better than they are supposed to! I had one back in the early 80's in Mass (before I escaped to Maine!) when a smoothie was needed for the BP season, and with careful load development (the details are long forgotten -- so don't ask!) I was getting an honest 2"...

    Buggered screw purpose?

You got some good advice up above (filing it smooth). I have a new-old-stock still sealed-in-original-package Treso ram rod (the aftermarket synthetic version) made for the TC Hawken; PM me if you are interested and I'll sell it to you for the bargain price of $10 to cover postage & handling...

    Finishing Techniques

If'in you don't mind looking at a Savage 99 stock -- this is one I refinished in Cabot's "Gunstock" color wood stain, with 10 hand-rubbed coats of Genuine Oil. The "after" refinishing is the bottom set in the image below. I do occasionally shoot it with blackpowder -- so don't delete my post...

    Finishing Techniques

If you want a low-gloss finish instead of glossy -- use B/C's "Genuine Oil", which is a new satin-finish version of TruOil. I've never seen it in any retail shops, but have gotten it from ebay. It goes on just like TruOil, protects the wood just as well, and looks great. "If that's the sheen...

    1862 MOUSE KILLER percussion

Back in the 70's there was a brick warehouse about 12 miles north of Boston that had neon signs in 3 windows saying TRAP GUNS SET. The local lore said they were 12 gauge trap guns loaded with buckshot, and that the town's Fire Chief said if there's ever a fire -- you're on your own. Then...

Deburring & Cleaning the Flash Channel of TC's Patent Breech

Good luck doing that -- that's how the ugly vice marks got onto my barrel. I've read numerous reports that the dang things weren't meant to be taken off... Although I do recall TC selling breech plug wrenches back in the day. (I don't think they worked well, but never tried one...)...
