Montana muzzleloading season, blaze orange, camouflage

There are a number of good replies here about hunter orange not making you visible to deer, and I agree with them. Usually an orange cap or hat is enough, but a small orange vest or panel on your upper body clothing is good. I have had deer (including bucks) walk to within 6 feet of me while...

Powder horn size and other questions

    Horn size matters!

    Trying to ID this gun

I agree with Mad Yankee. This is not a gun from the Franco-Prussian War, which happened in 1870.

What did I do to get kicked off?

"I'm sorry Dave, but I'm afraid I can't do that."

    Straight Groove Rifling

I believe it falls into the same category as bloodletting as a medical treatment, except bloodletting was more popular, even though this "treatment" probably killed a lot of people.

Curious, How do you clean your Pinned barrel Rifle or Smooth bore?

I agree with Rustic. ROUND toothpicks are your friends, and if you stick them firmily in the touch hole, you can partially fill the bore with water, slosh it around, and dump it. That, combined with a couple of water-soaked patch swabblings and then several dry patches, should clean the gun...

    Help getting started in muzzleloading

I agree with Larry: don't use lead to hold your flint in the jaws. Find a pair of worn-out leather gloves in your garage and cut a piece of the thin leather from part of the glove.

    1st time shooting a flintlock

Williams Gunsight sells a front and rear sight set with fiber optic elements. The front sight is a red dot and the rear sight is two green dots. I bought a set to replace a peep sight on a modern gun and I LOVE it. Visually lining them up is easy and instinctive. I know they are not historically...

    Beaver's

I was deer hunting on state land a number of years ago and came upon this very large felled tree at the edge of a field next to a low, flooded area. It took me a few seconds to figure out that a beaver had done it because of its size. I figure the beaver must have been 6 feet long and weighed...

    Beaver's

These are very nice pictures and a really good illustration of the work and effects beaver do!

    Beaver's

They're coming back. They've been seen in the Detroit River for a year or so now.

    You did well, Grasshopper.

What do you think of this knife

Agree with Necchi. A modern fantasy design mixed with a good dose of "ugly", and healthy shot of "odd". I'd grind it into something closer to 18th-19th century shape and find a way to get rid of or minimize the hilt.

Would this fit into fur trader era, or is it more French Indian War?

I agree with LRB: 19th century , but I would add "to 20th-21st century".
